I LEARNED TWO important things tonight.

Both of them centered around the woman in front of me.

“Frederick offered you half a million dollars to leave with him.”

Paisley stands very still, her blue eyes fixed on my face. “Yes.”

I was close enough to reach out and touch Frederick as he tried to lure Paisley away from me, offering her more than enough money to care for her mother.

Certainly more than I’ve offered her.

“You didn’t go.” I drag my hand up her side, bringing a fistful of her dress along with it.

She shakes her head. “No.”

I work her dress up between our bodies, fighting my desire to have her naked and the need to keep her so close nothing can get between us. “Why?”

She lifts her arms as I finally get the gown loose, letting me pull it from her body, but she doesn’t offer me the answer I need.

I haul her against me, holding her tight as I move to the bed. “I want an answer, Duchess.”

Paisley’s arms link around my neck as I lean forward, holding tight as I drop her down to the mattress, pinning her body under mine. “I don’t think you really do.”

I run my nose along her neck, breathing deep as I try to rein myself in.

But it’s too late for that.

Too late for a lot of things.

“You don’t know what I need.” I grab at the scrap of lace holding her panties together and fight them down her legs, dragging my lips along her skin as I move. “Tell me why you didn’t accept his offer.”

“Because I didn’t want to.” She’s being evasive.

I snag one of her feet and flip the heel off it, sending the shoe to the floor before moving to the other one, then I straighten over her, letting my eyes roam her naked body.

I shouldn’t have taken her there tonight.

She’s too pure for that place.

Too sweet.

Too good.

By all accounts they should have chewed her up and spit her out.

But that’s not what happened.

“He knows what I see in you now.” I run one hand up the center of her belly, spreading my fingers wide so I can drag them across one nipple while my thumb finds the other. “They all do.”

I saw the envy on more than a few faces. Saw the men who wished they had what I possess.

Yvonne saw it too. That’s why she came to steal Paisley from me. To parade around yet another successful pairing she initiated, leaving me to choose between following behind them like a child ready to make sure no one else touches their favorite toy…

Or stand my ground and prove my trust in the woman I chose to be at my side.

And Paisley proved my trust was well-placed.
