“My lease isn’t up for a year, but if that still works for you, count me in too,” Emma said.

“Awesome, so I have the one spot left. What d’ya say, Mrs. P., you wanna open a bakery? Or, Daisy, you have anything in mind?”

Kate’s mom and sister looked at each other and shook their heads.

“All right. Well, I’ll save that one for last, and we’ll see what happens.”

After dinner, everyone helped clear the table and put away the leftovers. Then they gathered in the living room for a game of charades—another holiday tradition that usually ended in mayhem.

At halftime, everyone took a break to go to the bathroom, get another piece of pie, or refill their wine glass. Kate and Adam sat on the couch, admiring the beautifully decorated Christmas tree and waiting for the game to restart.

“Hey. What’s up with Luna?” Adam said, pointing to the little dog, who was struggling toward them, weighed down by a tiny red bag around her neck.

“What?” Kate said, looking to where he was pointing. “Luna, come here, baby.”

Kate slid off the couch onto the floor to investigate. “It looks like it’s hung up on her collar. How on earth did that happen?” She fiddled with Luna’s collar, trying to free the bag.

“Mom, I think Luna got into something she shouldn’t have,” Kate called to her mother. “Did you have some unwrapped presents somewhere?”

Her mother walked in from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a dishtowel. “No, sweetie. I have everything wrapped and under the tree. Maybe it’s your dad’s?”

Edward was lounging in a chair across from the couch, taking a peek at the newspaper. “Not mine,” he said with a gleam in his eye. “Better open it and see what it is, Katie.”

Kate removed Luna’s collar and slid the little bag off. She sat back on the couch and noticed everyone had returned and was watching her. Inside the bag was a small square black box. The kind jewelry came in. Slowly, she opened the box to reveal a two-carat princess-cut diamond engagement ring. “What the? Who is this for?”

Adam dropped to one knee and took the box from her. “It’s for you, Kate. I’m asking you to marry me,” he said.

“Are you serious?” She waved her hands in front of her face to stop the tears from falling, but they fell anyway. “I don’t know what to say,” she said.

“Say yes,” Nana said, and everyone laughed.

“Of course I’ll marry you,” she said, kneeling down next to him. “How else could I be happy in life? I love you, Adam King. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.” She wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed him amid the clapping and awing of her family.

“Oh, sure,” Nana said, throwing up her hands. “Katie can make out right here on the living room floor, and I can’t even—”

“Not now, Mom,” Edward said. “Let’s just enjoy Katie’s moment, okay?”

“Oooh, finally,” Sophie said. “Next comes the—”

“Don’t say it,” everyone yelled in unison.

“Grandbabies!” Her mother beamed.

Nana started a loud, off-key version of “Here Comes the Bride,” and the whole family jumped in to stop her.

Kate leaned into Adam. “Are you sure you’re ready to take on all this?” She waved her hand around the room. “I can’t guarantee the crazy stopped with my dad.”

“I’d do anything for you, woman. If that involves becoming one of this nutty bunch, then so be it.”
