Falling for Emma—The Parker Sisters Book Two

CHAPTER ONE

Emma Parker had a secret. In her mind, it was a naughty secret. Well, maybe just a little scandalous. A tad risqué? The more she thought about it, the more she realized that to anyone else, it was just an ordinary secret. Ordinary and boring—a lot like Emma.

It was Sunday night, which meant family dinner at her parents’ house. She imagined how they’d react if she blurted out that she’d gotten a tattoo. No one at the table would believe it. It wassooosomething she wouldn’t do. They’d assume she’d overindulged on wine, which would be ironic, because she never did that either.

She actually had two secrets, but the second one would reveal itself before dinner was over.

“Pass the mashed potatoes, please?” Emma asked no one in particular. There was too much talking, laughter, and commotion for anyone to hear her. It was the story of her life. Between her four sisters, her folks, and Nana, she sometimes felt invisible. Not unloved, just unnoticed.

“So, then the wedding planner says, ‘They didn’t have pearl napkins. I thought bone would be a good substitute.’ Can you believe that? Bone? I may have to switch planners,” Kate said. Kate was Emma’s oldest sister. She was getting married in a few months, and the wedding was all she talked about.

Kate’s fiancé, Adam, rolled his eyes dramatically and mocked his soon-to-be-wife. He stuck his nose in the air and in a snooty British accent, said, “Yes, what a ghastly faux pas. I was flabbergasted when she suggested bone. Sooo ridiculous.”

Everyone laughed but Kate, who, after a second, cracked a smile and playfully hit Adam on the arm.

“Mom?” Kate said, looking for validation.

“It’s an abomination, honey,” their mother said. Kate turned back to Adam with a smug grin and an I-told-you-so glare.

Adam leaned over to their father and whispered, “I couldn’t tell the difference between the two.”

Kate heard him. “That’s because you’re a color-blind Neanderthal.”

Their dad looked at Adam and shrugged.

“So, your mom and I are taking off for a bit before the wedding. We’ll be gone a week. Which one of you wants to take care of the cat?”

“What?” Nana said. “I’m too old and helpless to feed a cat?”

“No, Mom. That’s the week you’re going to visit Pete.”
