Emotions.

I’d become hardened to them over the years, refusing to fall prey to the chains that feeling a goddamn thing strung around my neck. Through every aspect of my life, I’d remained just outside the zone of caring, allowing my rage to keep my body and mind honed, prepared for anything tossed in my direction.

Then she came into my life.

My beautiful flower that I couldn’t seem to get enough of. Even now, as I stormed through the house heading for my office, my cock continued to ache knowing she was right behind me. Her tenacity had led me to this decision, as well as the realization that the closest veterinarian would take two hours getting to my estate. In two hours, Aziza would slaughter every other animal, finally turning her anger and grief onto the men and women who’d cared for her, nurturing her back from the brink of death.

I threw open my office doors, taking long strides toward the bookshelf to unlock my vault.

“You need to tell me what’s going on,” Emily insisted, using the heated passion and the words I’d admitted to her to gain some level of control.

At some point I would be forced to help her understand that she would never be allowed to use the intensity of our increasing need out of the bedroom.

I threw her a look over my shoulder, forced to stop what I was doing in order to bask in her beauty. Goddamn it. What the hell was wrong with me? She was just a woman, a respite from my darkness. As I inhaled the combined scent of our rough, sinful act of sex, the reality of what was happening between us was entirely different than I’d anticipated.

Or wanted.

But the floodgates had opened and I’d allowed her to crawl inside. She appeared so angelic in her jeans and tee shirt, her long hair pulled into a ponytail. Her eyes were alight with frustration and determination, and I wanted to strip off her clothes and destroy her innocence.

I didn’t answer until I’d opened the vault. “You’ll learn soon enough. I don’t have time to waste.”

“How do you know? You’re not there.” She moved behind me, folding her arms.

I grabbed one of the tranquilizer guns and several darts, hoping I wouldn’t need to use them.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“What I’m doing, Emily, is trying to keep Aziza safe while we determine the condition of her cub.” I slapped one of the darts inside to have it ready, dropping the others in a small duffle. The cub’s injury was far too coincidental with the timing of the assassins. It was entirely possible they’d managed to venture further into the sanctuary before my soldiers had caught them. I moved past her, surprised when she remained standing in the same position. As I turned slowly, she lifted her chin, glaring at me with the same expression of admonishment I’d seen in New York. I grabbed her arm, yanking her against me and almost lost my resolve, forgoing everything but taking her.

“Let me go.”

“You wanted to know more about my world. Now, you’re getting your wish, but you will stay right by my side and do every damn thing I tell you to do. Understood?” I could tell another ripple of fear slammed against her system.

“Yes.”

After grabbing a blanket and closing the vault, I gave her another hard look. I kept my fingers wrapped around her arm until we reached the door. “Kiki. Come.” The pup trotted by my side as I headed for the entrance. As I headed for the same truck I’d used before, Emily seemed surprised by my choice in vehicles. Her sounds of shock amused the hell out of me. Perhaps she hadn’t quite figured me out after all.

I tossed the things into the bed, opening the door and allowing Kiki to jump inside. Then I lifted my head, watching her. “Get in.”

She didn’t bother looking at me as she followed my instructions, immediately clipping the seatbelt then staring out the passenger window.

After starting the engine, I didn’t waste time, the tires spinning on the driveway as I roared away from the house.

“What medical supplies do you have?”

“Enough, Emily.”

“Goddamn it. I won’t be able to help this animal unless I have a clean environment. I need gauze, antiseptic. Pain medication. Hell, I have no fucking clue what I’ll need because you won’t tell me anything.”

Sighing, my grip on the steering wheel tightened. “I have a small facility equipped with what you should need. If not, I’ll have one of my men purchase whatever you put on a list.”

“Oh, just like that.”

“Yes, just like that.”

“So you have a lot of injuries? What am I saying?” she laughed bitterly, finally reaching around to rub Kiki’s head. “You kill for a living. Is there a burial ground on the property as well or do you provide cremation services?”
