FIGHTING FOR FIONA

SUSANNE ASH

1

FIONA

“Good morning, boss.” I push the door open with my shoulder and step into the corner office, two coffees and a bag of bagels from Benjamin’s in my hand.

Dave Clayton chuckles, then laughs when he sees the stunned expression on my face as I realize he’s not alone.

“Come on in, Fiona, and shut the door. We’ve been waiting for you. You haven’t met Samuel in person yet, have you?” Dave steps over and takes his coffee and the small bag that holds our bagels from me.

“Thanks. No, I haven’t.” I walk up to the man in his late fifties dressed in an expensive suit and tie. “Fiona Anderson.”

“Samuel Cameron. Is this for me?” He shakes my hand and takes the to-go cup from Benjamin’s I hold in my other.

“Take a seat. There’s something we need to talk about.” Dave motions with his bagel to a chair in front of his desk.

“What is this?” Samuel spits out. I turn to see a look of disgust on his face.

“Vanilla soy latte.” I watch the cup land in the trash can with a slosh and a solid thud and try not to groan.

“I don’t think she brought that one for you.” Dave doesn’t hide his grin. He’s in a good mood, bouncing with the energy I desperately need.

“I guess not. Can we get started? I have to get back to Savannah.” Samuel takes the seat next to me and crosses his legs. He reaches for the water bottle in front of him and takes a sip.

“You’re probably wondering why I asked you to come in early this morning.” Dave puts his bagel down and wipes his hand on a napkin.

“I know I am,” Samuel mutters.

Dave ignores his business partner, who runs the Georgia office. “Samuel and I are ready to take C&C Productions to the next level. We expect some explosive growth over the next five years. To make that happen, we have to get onto everyone’s radar.” He pauses.

“Cut to the chase, Dave.” Samuel turns to me. “We’re going for a big picture. A blockbuster hit would be ideal, but I’ll take anything.”

I swallow. “What does that have to do with me?”

“That’s what I’m wondering. Why do we need to discuss this with your secretary?” Samuel grumbles.

“She’s not my secretary. She’s our best junior producer. Without Fiona, Meet me at Dawn never would have gotten done in time and under budget.”

“Huh.” Samuel almost looks impressed.

I’m trying to get over the fact that he thought I was a secretary.

“Alright, hit movie. We have less than a year to find a script and produce a picture that will get us on everyone’s radar. And did I mention that we need to do it at a fairly small budget? No huge stars, no fancy special effects. Just good old-fashioned amazing storytelling. Something that gets everyone talking. It’s a tall order and will take the effort of every single person at C&C.”

“We’re filming here?” I ask.

“We are. The project will be an east coast production. It’ll make us stand out and maybe bring a little extra attention to our little town.”

Calling Wilmington a small town is ridiculous. Sure, it’s no major city, but compared to Rockville, where I grew up, it’s huge.

“We’re bringing on a fresh face to spearhead this. A hungry young director with enough experience in Hollywood to make this happen.”

“And I would like you to work closely with him. Show him the ropes around here and most importantly, keep everyone on task.” Dave’s expression changes. His usual happy-go-lucky demeanor is gone. He’s dead serious, and this project is much more important than he’s letting on.

“Of course. Whatever you need. When is this big-shot producer coming in?” I ask.
