“That doesn’t matter. You still need to do something. I’ll help you put it together. Down here or in Rockville?” she asks, grabbing a pen and paper.

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll talk to Greg and come up with something. It’ll have to be here, though. There’s no way I can make it back home before the rehearsal dinner.”

“It’s coming up quick, isn’t it? That’s the weekend Alice is flying back home. Her flight is booked, and I’m taking her to the airport. She’s all set. And between you and me, very excited.” Cara winks at me conspiratorially. Operation Make Alice’s Day has been her favorite work-related task from the sound of it.

“Thank you for handling all that. I don’t know what I would do without you.”

“You’d be completely lost. Go set up. They’ll be ready for you in a few minutes,” Cara said, pointing to the writers’ room where two of my screenwriters are still busy tweaking the lines for tomorrow’s shoot. It’s going to be an interesting afternoon.

“Sorry about this, man.” I raise my beer and look at my brother who’s in town for this sad excuse of a bachelor party.

“This is perfect. You know me. I’m not into crazy parties and stuff. A quiet night out on the town with my little brother is exactly what I need right now.”

“That bad?” I ask. Greg looks as tired as I feel, adding to the guilt of making him drive all the way out here.

“Just wedding stuff. You know Mom. And Gwen is worse. Everything has to be perfect, and for some reason, they insist on getting my opinion on everything. Not that they’d ever agree with me or use my suggestions.” He shakes his head and takes a sip of his beer.

“Couple more days, and it’ll be all over. Then you’re off on your honeymoon. That’s got to be something to look forward to.” I wiggle my eyebrows.

It gets the expected reaction. Greg laughs and looks more relaxed than I’ve seen him since he got in a few hours ago.

“Can I get you guys anything else?” the young waitress who’s been eyeing me since we entered the bar asks.

“Wanna grab some food?” Greg asks.

“Here?” I look up, surprised. The burgers the couple at the table next to us ordered look pretty good, and my stomach growls.

“Why not? Let’s live dangerously. It’s my last trip as a single man. What do you recommend?” he asks the waitress.

“The grilled chicken with peppers is my favorite, and you can’t go wrong with a bacon cheeseburger.”

“We’ll take one of each, two orders of onion rings, and another round of beers,” my brother says.

“Now we’re talking. I might be able to tell Cara about this after all. Wanna play a round of darts while we wait for the food?”

He beats me three games to none by the time the waitress returns with our sandwiches.

“You two look like you’re having a good time. Celebrating something special?” she asks, setting the food in front of us.

“As a matter of fact, we are. I’m getting married next week, and I’m spending some quality time with my best man and this amazing looking chicken sandwich.”

“How about you? You’re from around here, aren’t you?” She’s leaning against an empty chair, losing all interest in Greg and focusing it on me instead.

“I am. I’m in town for work.”

“What do you do?” She looks like she’s still trying to place me.

“He’s directing a movie,” Greg says, earning himself a kick under the table.

“That’s why you look so familiar. Are you running auditions for anything? I’ve done a bit of acting and am taking classes when I’m not working here.”

“You and everyone else in this town,” I mutter softly enough she can’t hear in the crowded bar. “Sorry, I’m not. I’m in the middle of shooting a movie.”

“Alright. Well, keep me in mind for your next project.” She puts a card with her name and number on the table before walking off to take another order.

“She’s cute. You should hire her.” Greg grabs an onion ring and bites into it.

“When did you become a casting director?” I ask. He doesn’t get it. Doesn’t understand how bad it can be if word gets out around town that I’m a director. Aspiring actors and actresses will be lining up around the door, making it impossible for me to enjoy a meal out. So far, I’ve been able to keep a low profile in Wilmington. I plan on keeping it that way.
