“This has been a wonderful day,” he said softly. “I’ve enjoyed spending it with you.”

“I’ve enjoyed it too,” she replied. “You’re good company.”

“We get along well,” he agreed. “I like it that we can laugh over the same things.”

“I’m sorry I was so stubborn,” Lily said softly. “Maybe I need a shovel over the head, too.”

“Never,” Ashton said, his lips brushing her ear. “There are better ways to bring about peace.”

“Just don’t send Bec into the fray,” Lily grinned. “She makes everything worse.”

Ashton chuckled softly. “No, I wouldn’t dream of it,” he replied. “I had more … intimate ways in mind.”

“Oh?” Lily looked up, only to find his lips hovering just above hers. Her heart hammered and she closed her eyes, tilting her face up.

Ashton’s lips covered hers with surprising gentleness. They were as silky and firm as she remembered, and she kissed him back eagerly until they were both breathless.

“Hey, you two, cut it out!”

Lily looked up to see the grinning ride attendant watching them.

“Are you getting off?” he continued.

“What do you think?” Ashton retorted good-naturedly. “Why ruin a good thing?”

“I take it that’s a no,” the young man said.

“You got it,” Ashton agreed, and the other man laughed.

“Half your luck,” he said. “A ride on a Ferris wheel at sunset with a pretty lady to kiss. What else could you do with your time?”

“Not spend it talking to you,” Ashton said with a grin. “Send us up again.”

“Right. Off you go to the top.”

“He’s a good friend, Tony is,” Ashton said as they started going up again. “We joke around with each other all the time. He’s wanted to meet you for ages.”

“Meet me?” Lily asked in surprise. “Why?”

“I told him about you,” Ashton said matter-of-factly. “He suggested that I bring you here at sunset.”

Lily looked at him in amazement. “The schemer!”

Ashton’s eyes twinkled with suppressed laughter. “I had to do something out of the ordinary to impress you.”

“Well, you can’t beat this.” Lily gestured toward the western sky, which was taking on a fiery orange glow tinted with purple streaks. “This is magnificent.”

They fell silent as the car rose towards the top of the wheel. Lily leaned her head against Ashton’s shoulder as he held her close.

When the ride reached the top, it stopped. They gazed at the colorful panorama before them, and Lily felt as if the world had continued without them.

“I feel as if we’re the only ones up here,” she said, snuggling against Ashton’s warmth. “I wish we could stay up here forever. This is perfect.”

“Tony might just oblige for a little longer,” Ashton murmured with a grin.

“Did you tell him to stop us at the top?”

“Well … I might have whispered a word in his ear,” Ashton murmured. “It’s not every day you get a lovely girl all to yourself at the top of a Ferris wheel at sunset.”
