She heard her mother’s voice in the distance.

“Because he’s seeing a lot of himself and his own past actions in Toby… and your father knows it,” her mother announced lovingly. “I remember another young man who kissed a girl by the lockers – and ended up falling in love with her later on… don’t you, Jackson?”

“Don’t listen to her,” her father whispered, smiling at Samantha, before he put his arm around her shoulders. “And go wash your mouth with lots of soap and water.”

“Daddy…” Samantha sputtered, laughing.

“Seriously. I think that boy’s tongue was everywhere, and it makes me want to throw up just thinking about it,” her father grimaced, before softening up. “I just want my baby girl happy, okay?”

“I am happy,” she smiled up at him.

“Flyboys are no good… just ask your mother.”

“Flyboys have hearts of gold and make wonderful memories,” her mother said, walking over in her bathrobe and sliding under her father’s other arm lovingly, hugging him. “And I, for one, am in full support of Toby dating you. He’s a good boy – and always has been. His father can be a jerk… but we still adore Valkyrie after all these years, and he’s been a good friend to us both.”

“Maybe it’s ‘cause my dad’s been on Toby’s case since he was ten?”

“I thought he started sniffing around you when you were thirteen?”

“Daddy…”

“You were ten? Jeeez… maybe I should retract my offer to have him come to dinner with the family.”

“Daddy!” Samantha laughed. “Trust me, I’ve brushed him off enough in the past… so much so that I’m surprised he’s still interested.”

“Hmphhh…” her father grunted in approval.

“I’d like to see where this goes,” Samantha admitted, feeling painfully shy as both of her parents looked at her. “I like him – a lot.”

“Then that’s all that matters.”

“He had better be good to you and treat you right.”

“I don’t think that is going to be a problem, Daddy,” Samantha smiled, leaning upwards and kissing him on the cheek. “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight, baby girl,” he whispered tenderly – and grimaced. “And go wash your mouth. Ugh, I’ve got Saxon germs on my face now.”

Samantha laughed.

“Uncle Hunter… please sit still,” Samantha uttered, trying to remain painfully calm. “You are my last patient of the day… of all the days too…”

“Dinner plans?” he said pointedly, causing her to sit back on her stool in awareness.

“Did someone put you up to finally coming here? Or is it the massive canyon you are letting rot away in that molar?” she snapped.

“Canyon…” he muttered, wincing. “That and I hate needles.”

“I know you do.”

“Your aunt is waiting for me…”

“Then you need to let me do my job, please,” Samantha replied, glancing up at the clock. “It won’t take long if you can at least let me get started, and then you won’t have to see me for another year.”

Her uncle hesitated.

“Want me to get Aunt Glory?” she asked softly, understanding. “It’s okay, but I promise it will only be a little pinch on your cheek.”
