Her uncle cursed under his breath, opened his mouth, pinched his eyes shut and turned away.

“Just don’t bite me, okay?”

“Hurry…” he muttered.

“Just my finger touching your cheek,” Samantha said gently, feeling the inside of his mouth and looking carefully at the tissue, spotting an ideal location. “Little pinch… that’s it. Now keep your eyes closed and don’t move.”

She heard his slight intake of breath as she injected him with Novocaine as quickly as possible, yanking the needle from his mouth in case he bit down. Her uncle was quite paranoid when it came to needles…

He’d passed out before – and for a new dentist? It was quite alarming and horrifying. She thought she’d killed him and dialed 911, only to have her aunt come walking back with one of the paramedics, as he slowly came to in her chair.

She knew what to expect now.

“Breathe…” Samantha urged, taking her uncle’s hand in hers. “You’re good and I’m finished. Are you with me, Uncle Hunter?”

“Yeah…” he replied weakly. “Hate needles.”

“I know,” she smiled tenderly, looking up to see her aunt standing there silently, looking almost as anxious as her patient was. “Wait until Aunt Glory hears how brave you were.”

“Don’t tell her… I got lightheaded…” Hunter whispered, his head lolling slightly as he hung on to keep from passing out from his severe phobia. “Love her… so much… and it scares her…”

“Don’t pass out on me and it will be our little secret,” Samantha promised, looking up at her aunt to see her teary-eyed, loving smile, before patting his hand in hers. “You still with me, Uncle Hunter?”

“Yeah…”

“Go” Samantha mouthed, smiling, and saw Glory nod before returning to the waiting area. She patted her uncle’s hand again, feeling his grip tighten slightly.

Good, she mused. He would not pass out this visit.

“You okay?”

“Yeah… getting numb finally, too.”

“Perfect. Let’s get started and I promise – no more needles,” Samantha nodded. “Just a little bit of a filling and you’ll be finished in no time.”

“Thought you said it was a canyon?”

“It is – to me.”

“Ughhhh…” he drooled, cracking open an eye and touching his face. “I’m completely numb now.”

“And you want to be,” she smiled. “Close your eyes, lay back in the chair, and I’ll be done in a jiffy.”

An hour later, Samantha was cleaning up, suctioning the last of water and debris from her uncle’s mouth before sitting him up in the chair. Glancing at the clock, she saw it was already five and still needed to wrap up a few things before heading home.

“Don’t tell your aunt,” her uncle asked again as she handed him a few paper towels because he was drooling again.

“Wipe your mouth – and I won’t,” she smiled. “Don’t eat anything for a little while, or at least until you aren’t numb anymore. I don’t want you to bite your cheek or tongue.”

“Thanks, Sam.”

“You betcha,” she hesitated. “Can I ask a quick question?”

“Sure.”

“Why did you come and sit down at our table last night?” Samantha asked quietly. “You know, Toby’s really nice and I like him.”

Her uncle sat there for a moment, looking at her, and then turned away, actually flushing and looking sheepish.
