She enjoyed being on the same side as Toby and that they were no longer fighting, she realized happily.
“Marry her before you do something stupid like this? Okay?” her mom ordered, before pointing at her father. “Not a word, Jackson!”
“Mom!” Samantha interjected, stunned, and looked at Toby – who actually nodded in agreement, looking directly at her parents as he looked over her head, avoiding her eyes.
“Get the kit… NOW, Samantha?” her mother snapped. “I will not pick sides or go to anyone’s funeral in the same week we are supposed to be celebrating another proud graduation from college. Toby’s sister is pregnant, and the deed is done. It’s just time to pick up the pieces now and I have a feeling that Luke and Nicolette are getting married in the morning.”
“Move out, team…” her dad snapped – and they all moved quickly, including Toby. Samantha raced out of the house, first aid kit under her arm, and hopped in Toby’s car… ignoring the confused look her father gave the two of them.
“Do you need to ride with your dad?” Toby asked bluntly. “My father is going to be livid… can you find out where my mom is?”
“Sure. Where’s your phone?”
Toby dug it out of his pocket and quickly handed it to Samantha as he drove.
“Turn left here…” she ordered as his mother came on the phone.
“Toby! Oh my gosh – where are you? Tell me you are with your dad right now…”
“It’s Samantha, Mrs. Saxon. Toby is driving over to get his father, and he wanted to see where you were…”
“Mom?” Toby said loudly, and Sam put the phone on speaker. “Mom, what is going on?”
“I asked your father to help get the house ready for the graduation party and he found a pregnancy test in the trash. Next thing I know, he was in here, hugging me and celebrating… and I didn’t know why - until he showed me the test. Then he started screaming up at the ceiling for Nicolette to come down from her room – and he threw the pregnancy test at the wall… he’s absolutely furious…”
“I bet he is…”
“Toby – I’m going to need help to patch the wall. The pregnancy test is embedded in it,” his mother sobbed. “I’m going to be a grandmother and your father is going to kill Armadillo’s son…”
“Mom, no one is going to kill anyone…”
“You’ve never seen your father this angry – but I have!”
Toby pulled up in front of the apartments to see Hunter, Firefly, Glory, and Melody in the yard… as Reaper pulled up behind them, his tires squealing to a stop.
“VALKYRIE!” Reaper hollered, running past the car Toby was driving to tackle the larger man marching towards the building, into the grass bodily…
“Oh, my gosh…” Samantha whispered, stunned – and Toby flew out of the car. She heard Toby’s mother panicking and sobbing, knowing she had to get out of the car and do something.
“I gotta go, Mrs. Saxon! We’ll call you back in a few! I promise!”
She hung up the phone immediately, only to see Toby running for his father. Mr. Saxon was quickly throwing the other men who’d jumped on him in a dog pile, off of him - like they were nothing.
“Dad! DAD!” Toby hollered, tackling him back down and hugging him. “Dad, think about this… please! Listen, it’s done…”
“I’m gonna kill that scrawny man for touching…”
“It’s done, Dad…” Toby said again, more gently, hugging his father. “Think about it. If it was me and I’d screwed up, would you let Thumper beat me to a bloody pulp?”
“You wouldn’t do that! I taught you better!”
“I know you did – but think about it… would you let Thumper lay his hands on me like you are about to do to Armadillo’s eldest son? You always told me you’d have my back…”
Toby sat there in the grass, looking at his father, and Samantha watched the entire exchange, realizing just how strong and protective these men were about their children – and just how much it was tearing up her own father to watch her falling in love with Toby.
Toby looked over his shoulder at Samantha – and she saw Mr. Saxon’s eyes watching her as well.
“Dad, I love Samantha and always have… but if I had crossed the line with her, would you have supported me when I needed you?”
