“I’m a hugger if you don’t mind,” Cam said.

“Me too,” my mother said.

After pulling Cam in for a hug, my mother responded, “Thank you for coming and celebrating with us.”

“My pleasure,” Cam smiled.

“Make sure you get plenty of food, there are some desserts over on that other table and tons of water and soda in the coolers. Have fun, okay?” Mother instructed.

“Yes, ma’am,” Cam responded.

“Morris, thank you for my present,” Mother said.

“No problem. Happy birthday.”

Mother grabbed my hand and held it for a second before walking away. That was the longest she and I had touched since I was a child.

“She is beautiful,” Cam said after she and I sat down at a table.

“She is. I can’t deny that.”

Cam ran her hand through my beard, then said, “You have her eyes.”

“People tell me that all the time. I used to hear it from everyone when I was younger. You know the people that would stop by Madear’s house that changed my diapers.” I used my fingers to make quotation marks. “They always commented on how much I looked like Pearline.”

“Is Madear coming?” Cam asked.

“No, she won’t step foot back in St. Louis unless someone is dead or in trouble. Not even for Mother’s birthday. My older siblings and I purchased her a condo near Daytona Beach, and she refuses to leave,” I explained. “We will have to go and visit her one day.”

“I would like that. I met Los,” Cam said.

“Yeah? Did he say something stupid? He has a knack for saying some dumb crap.”

“No, he was nice. Dinah introduced us. He spoke and kept it moving,” Cam said.

“Good. I don’t feel like whooping his ass for being disrespectful.”

“I also met Vera, Leroy, Alisa, Kira, Lionel, and Stella. Of course, you know I met Sarah and Dinah,” Cam said.

“You remembered all my siblings' names that fast?”

“Yep, I have a little memorization tool that I use to remember names. I don’t want to always ask my new clients their names over and over,” Cam explained.

“You’re dope, you know that right?” I gave her a quick peck.

“Yeah, I know,” she smiled.

There were various games of spades, bid whist, and dominos going on. Some of the younger family members were playing a game of volleyball, while others were playing basketball.

“Cam, you want to be on the girls’ volleyball team?” Stella, my youngest sister, asked.

“Sure. I think I can still serve the ball although it’s been years,” Cam said.

“Moe, you coming?” Stella asked.

“Yeah, I’ll play.”

We played guys against girls volleyball. Cam was extremely competitive, but she fit right in with my extra competitive female family members. They talked a lot of crap on the other side of the net. After the guys lost three straight games, we took a break from playing to eat.
