I called the girls up from the playground after Cam and I fixed their plates.

“Daddy, we want to sit with our cousins to eat,” Skye said.

“That’s fine. I will carry your plate for you.”

I followed the girls over to Los and Karleen’s table.

The girls climbed up on the bench next to Los’ daughters. I placed their plates in front of them and rounded the table to go back and sit with Cam.

I heard Los mumble, “Even his daughters don’t want to sit with him.”

I turned around to respond just as Karleen nudged him and said, “Shut up, Karlos.”

I took a deep breath and continued on to the area Cam and I had set up.

“This food is amazing,” Cam said while biting into a barbecued beef rib.

“Yeah, that’s one thing this family can do together is cook. Sarah can bake anything. Vera can cook anything in the kitchen, and Leroy is the grill master.”

“What about you?” Cam asked.

“I’m on cups and plates duty,” I chuckled.

“You cook well, though,” she said.

“You’re just saying that because you like me.”

“I like you a lot,” she smiled.

After we finished eating, Karleen came and sat near us, which in turn brought over Los. Cam and Karleen chatted about everything like they were long lost friends. I spoke when necessary but tried to keep to myself. I figured if I ignored Los, we would survive the afternoon.

“Daddy!” Fee came running into the pavilion with Katy in tow. “I love my cousin! Can we play together more often?”

“Of course, sweetheart,” Karleen answered for me. “Cam and I will set something up. Right, Cam?”

Cam looked at me.

“It’s up to you,” I responded.

If she wanted to spend time with my girls and my sister-in-law, I wasn’t opposed to it at all. She was my lady. I wanted her to get to know my people even if I was barely around them.

“Yep, we will,” Cam smiled.

“Yay,” the girls cheered and ran back down to the playground.

“See Moe, you have to bring them around more often. They love each other,” Karleen said.

“Assholes don’t have ears,” Los said.

Moe took in a deep breath. I could see the muscles in his jaws were clenched, but he didn’t say anything.

“Los!” Karleen scolded. “Stop it.”

“Stop what? Speaking the truth?” Los’ voice got louder as he continued. “This wack ass nigga doesn’t come around for months or even years at a time, and we are just supposed to be excited about that? Naw, that’s some bullshit.”

“You’ve run out of chances to call me out of my name. I didn’t say shit to you, but since you opened your big ass mouth and let all that shit fall out of it, you must be asking for another ass whooping,” Morris said.
