“Yes?” she said after returning to my office.

“Can you call the school and let them know that Beatrice will be picking the girls up today. Tell Ms. Patrick, the secretary, that if the girls are not in Beatrice’s car by three-ten to call me.”

I’d become more familiar with Ms. Patrick through the Caldwells. She was one of the secretaries in the school’s office. She knew about my situation with Beatrice and told me that she would look out for the girls. She’d become my ears and eyes when it was Beatrice’s days to get the girls from school.

“Got it, Moe,” she smiled.

“I appreciate you.”

Iheard a knock on my office door.

“Yes?”

Angel poked her head in, “Hey, stranger.”

I stood from my desk.

“Hey, come in.”

We greeted each other with a quick kiss.

“I passed Anna in the hall. She said I could just knock on the door.”

Angel’s long black hair was parted down the middle and hung to the middle of her back. She looked good in her cream suit and nude pumps.

“I was wondering if you had time to have lunch with me, my treat,” she smiled.

“Your treat? Of course,” I answered.

It had been several weeks since Angel and I had seen each other. Either she’d been out of town, or I was busy with the girls. I hadn’t put much effort into connecting with her. It seemed as if she was fresh out of effort where it concerned me as well.

We decided to walk a few blocks down to a small Italian restaurant. We both ordered the lunch special and had a pleasant conversation while we ate our food.

“Morris,” Angel started.

“Yes?”

“Where is this…us…going?” she finished.

I wiped my mouth with my napkin and sat back in my chair.

“Honestly?” I returned.

“Yes.”

“Nowhere. You know as well as I do that we have grown apart.”

“We’ve grown apart because you pushed me away,” Angel said.

“If you really feel like I pushed you away…”

“Yes, I really do feel like you pushed me away. I’m always the one trying to set up dates for us or making plans. You are always the one with a full schedule or canceling the plans.” Angel said.

“Angel, I apologize. I sincerely do. It was not my intention to push you away. I had some hard crap going on in my life, and maybe I lost focus. I’m sorry. You’ve been doing your own thing as well.”

“My own thing?” she asked.
