“Councilman Henry. I’ve heard from more than one person that you two are pretty close.”

“I…I mean…” she stuttered.

“It’s all good, Angel. Don’t start making up crap. You know I hate liars. I would much rather spend this last time together being truthful with each other.”

“Fine, Chuck and I have been out a few times and…”

“Traveled together. I heard about the appearance you made with him in New York. Then you called me talking about you missed me.”

“We were just friends, Morris. At least he had time for me,” she defended.

“Aye,” I threw my hands up in front of me. “I ain’t even mad. It bothered me that I had to hear about you from other people, but it’s all good. Two things are stopping us from ever being together, my daughters. You’ve never asked about them or seemed to care about them. At first, I thought that maybe you needed to warm up to the idea of them. Then I figured out that you just didn’t give a fuck…”

“Morris…” she started.

“Naw, Angel, and that’s cool too. This was a mistake the second time around. We were both looking for something that the other one couldn’t give. I don’t blame you for finding someone to spend time with. I wish you both well.”

“So, that’s it?” Angel said.

“Unless you have something else to say about the subject?”

“No, I don’t. I agree. Can we at least finish our lunch?” she asked.

“Yes, we can, my treat.”

Cam

“Hey, Lady Bug!” I said after Lyrica’s face appeared on my phone.

“Hi! I miss you! When will we see each other again?” she asked.

“Ummm, you’re the super megastar. I’m just a lowly hairdresser. I have time; you don’t!”

“Oh, that reminds me of that song that says there’s not a friend like the lowly Jesus. Do you know that one? It’s old.”

“I think I heard it before when I went to an old people church,” I replied.

“Cam, what is an old people church?”

“You know the one where the median age of the members is like sixty-five. They sing out of those books in the back of the pew, and most of them are sleep during the sermon.”

“Girl shut up!” Lyrica laughed.

“I’m serious. I think they sang that there.”

“If it’s like you just described, then I’m sure they did. Anyway, when I was little, I thought the song said there’s not a friend like the lonely Jesus. I kept wondering, why is Jesus so lonely if he has so many friends?” Lyrica chuckled. “I was super grown before I figured out that the song said lowly.”

“Oh, I make up words to songs all the time. My biggest offenders are Michael and Janet Jackson. I don’t think I know the actual words to any of their songs.”

“I know the words to their songs, but it’s hard making the actual words fit into the noises they make,” she laughed.

“Right? So, what’s going on?”

“I’m calling to check on you, but I also need you to come to California for a photoshoot that I will have to do before I release this album. I need Cam hair for these photos.”

“I got you, boo. Just have your assistant block off the time on my schedule like she always does and send me the itinerary.”

“Also, I have a new client for you. Her name is Sunni Hathaway, you’ve heard of her, right?”
