“I’m choosing myself over my daughters! I love me first! They have you. I realized in the month that I spent away that they are fine with you. Their hair is combed, they are doing well in school, they are thriving! They are fine. It’s my turn at happiness!”

I ran my hand down my face and through my beard, trying to rein in my anger.

“Let my daughters out of the truck, Bee,” I said as calmly as I could.

“Are you going to tell them with me or naw?”

I wanted to snatch my daughters out of that truck and protect them from a mother who cared more about herself than them, much like my mother. I didn’t want them to have the same relationship with their mother that I had with mine, but Bee was making it difficult. Now I had to watch the disappointment in my girls’ eyes when their mother announced that she was leaving town.

“Get them out of the truck before I snatch that gotdamn door off and pull them out,” I seethed.

“Moe…”

I turned and started walking towards the truck.

“Okay, okay,” Bee said, jumping in front of me. “I will let them out. Please help me tell them.”

I looked at her hand, touching my forearm. She quickly removed it.

“Get them the fuck out of that truck, then you can come in and tell them.”

Bee quickly turned and opened the truck door to let the girls out.

“I’m going to walk you up to your house, okay?” Bee said to the girls.

“I’ll wait out here,” Tony announced.

I didn’t respond to his comment. He wasn’t invited in anyway.

The girls held Bee’s hands and led her to our apartment.

“Have a seat on the couch next to me,” Bee said to the girls.

The girls sat on each side of her and waited for her to speak.

“I have to tell you both something very important,” Bee started. “Mommy is going to move to a new place.”

“You’re getting a new house?” Skye asked.

“Will we have a room?” Fee questioned.

“Yes, I am getting a new house, but it’s not here in St. Louis. It’s in another town called Atlanta,” Bee explained.

“Atlanta? Like on the show you watch with the housewives?” Skye asked.

“Yes,” Bee responded.

“Is that far away?” Fee asked, starting to put two and two together.

“It’s not very far away, but it does mean that we won’t see each other as often. You are going to stay here with your dad, and I am going to go there and find a new house and a job, then you both can come and see me,” Bee answered.

“Mommy, we don’t want you to go,” a teary-eyed Skye responded.

“Who’s going to come toMuffins with Momsat our school?” Fee asked.

“Who’s going to help us find our dresses for our date with daddy?” Skye added.

“I will be one phone call away…” Bee started.
