“Okay, goodbye.”

After replying to most of my siblings’ birthday texts, I put on my black jeans, a black V-neck sweater and my black Gucci loafers. My gold Cartier watch and tiger eye bead bracelets finished the outfit. I laid my camel pea coat and black fedora on the couch.

I’m at the gate – Drew

I pushed in the code giving him access to the parking lot.

“Nigglet!” Drew called out while knocking on my door.

I snatched the front door open and found a smiling Drew with two brown paper bags in his hands.

Drew was a year older than me and prided himself in taking care of his body. He was a gym rat and didn’t skip leg day. He was a pescatarian that swore that staying away from meat kept his skin clear and young looking.

He and I worked out together for a while, but my schedule got too hectic with taking on the girls full time, so I hadn’t been to the gym with him in months.

“Happy Birthday!” he yelled while walking into my place.

“Same to you, bro!”

We hugged.

“I got us some drinks before we head out. Darron is going to meet us at the spot.”

“Cool.”

I grabbed two glasses and sat them in front of him. He filled each glass halfway with cognac then lifted his glass in the air. I followed suit.

“Here’s to another year,” he said.

“Here’s to it,” I responded.

We both took a drink.

“Aye, did you invite ole’ girl, what’s her name…Angel?” Drew asked.

“No, Angel and I are old news,” I responded.

“Oh, you must’ve mentioned that picture with her and baldielocks,” Drew chuckled.

“Naw, I didn’t need to mention it. I was over it and I knew she was too. Plus, she wasn’t really checking for my shorties,” I responded.

“Awww, yeah. She had to go. The last thing you want is to be kicking it with a chick that’s fighting for your attention with your kids. That shit is stupid and frustrating,” Drew said.

“It’s all good, though. I wished her the best. I invited someone else tonight.”

“Word?” Drew pitched one eyebrow, “Who?”

“A friend. She may not be able to make it due to her work schedule, but if she does make it, I will introduce her.”

“Did you tell her to bring some friends?”

“No, I didn’t. I ain’t trying to have my birthday ruined by your chicks fighting each other. Them women you kick it with like to pop up on a nigga,” I laughed.

“Aye, you ain’t neva lied!” Drew laughed as well.

We finished our drinks and then headed to the club. We passed through the familiar city streets of St. Louis to our location,Club Obelisk. The line for the club stretched from one corner of the block to the other. I’d never heard of the place, but apparently, I was the only one in St. Louis who hadn’t.

“Aye! Happy birthday,” Darron said when we met him in front of the club.
