“I will. Go… enjoy yourself.”

“I’ll see you at the rehearsal dinner,” I promise. She smiles, and I wave at them as they head out of the room.

“Finally, alone at last,” Sawyer mutters, climbing back onto my bed and taking me in his arms. Just then, the door opens, and a nurse walks in. Sawyer groans, and I stifle a giggle.

“Mr. Mitchell, do you not remember our earlier conversation? The only reason you got away with being on the bed last time I checked on Hallie was because she was asleep. This is not a hotel. Please get out of the patient’s bed,” the nurse says, her voice stern. He raises his eyebrows at me before pulling a face, and I bite my lip in an attempt not to laugh. He climbs off and takes a seat in the large recliner in the room.

“Visiting time is nearly over. I’m going to have to ask you to leave soon,” she tells him, putting a blood pressure cuff on my arm.

“I’m afraid I can’t do that. I’m Hallie’s close protection officer.”

She raises her eyebrows at me and cocks her head. “Is that right, Hallie?” she asks.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Sawyer nodding frantically behind her. “Yes. Yes, he is,” I choke out, my mouth suddenly dry.

“Hmm…” she mutters, obviously not believing a word either of us is saying.

“I can get my boss on the phone,” Sawyer offers. “Or perhaps you’d like to speak to Detective Wilmot of the Savannah Police Department?”

She looks between us before shaking her head. “That won’t be necessary. You can stay.” She finishes taking my vitals and leaves me some pain meds before heading for the door. “Mr. Mitchell?” She waits for Sawyer to look over. “Stay off the bed.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Sawyer says, saluting her. She rolls her eyes before closing the door behind her, and we both burst out laughing.

“You’ve made a fan there, Mr. Mitchell,” I tease.

“She likes me, I can tell. Scoot over.”

“You’re going to get into trouble,” I warn him as I shift over.

“I’ll take my chances. You’re worth getting into trouble for.” I inhale sharply as pain shoots through my leg. Seeing me grimace, he picks up my meds.

“I know you’re in pain, Hallie. Take them.” He passes me the two white tablets and holds out a glass of water.

“They make me sleepy. I don’t want to sleep.” I pout.

“I’ll be here when you wake. I’ll always be wherever you are, Hallie. You’re my home.” His hand cups my cheek, and I lean my face into his touch.

My heart is so full of love for him.

When I was in the woods with Blake, I really believed I’d never see him again. I couldn’t see a way out, and I knew if Sawyer hadn’t shown up, Blake would have killed me. I’d wanted to scream and shout that life was cruel. I hadn’t loved him long enough to lose him. Now I realize an eternity wouldn’t be long enough. I want to make every second count, and I want it to start now.

“Do you remember what you asked me in my bathroom at the beginning of the week?” I look up at him uncertainly.

“Yeah, I remember.”

“Ask me again,” I whisper.

His face erupts into a smile, and butterflies flutter in my stomach. “Will you move in with me, Hallie?”

“Yes.”

His smile grows even wider if that’s possible, and his mouth drops to mine. “I’m going to marry you one day, Hallie Anderson,” he says against my lips, and before I can respond, he’s kissing me, pushing his tongue into my mouth.

I moan against his lips, my hands winding around his neck as the kiss intensifies.

Pulling back, he stares into my eyes. “I love you, baby.”

“I love you too. I’m so glad you crossed the line,” I whisper.
