“Never heard of him. Is he known to the cops?”

“A few minors as a kid. Nothing more. Wilmot’s done some digging though, and it turns out he was in the foster care system at the same time Bryant was. Bryant’s a few years older than him. They were in the same group home.”

“That’s the connection. Do they have him in custody?”

“No. They’ve checked his last known address, and he hasn’t been seen for weeks. Wilmot’s sending over his license photo now, and they’re putting out an APB. The guy they brought in made a positive ID.”

Just then, his phone beeps, and I watch as Logan opens the file. As he turns the phone around, the blood drains from my face when I see the screen. Anger and fear bubble up inside me, and I punch the wall, my hand going straight through the drywall. “I need to get to Hallie. Now!”

“I’ll come with you.”

I call Hallie and Brooke nonstop on the way to the cabin, but neither of them answers. I toss my phone at Logan and hit the steering wheel.

I promised her she was safe.

I promised all of this was over.

I promised I would never let anyone hurt her.

Fuck! I pray to God I can get to her in time to keep at least one of my promises.

ChapterThirty-Seven

Brooke

“Someone get me some more alcohol,” I shout from the hot tub. “My glass is empty!”

“Take it easy, Brooke. It’s not even dark yet,” my bridesmaid, Kristie, exclaims. “I don’t want to be holding your hair back while you barf everywhere.”

“I’mneversick,” I assure her. “But if I were, the job of hair holding goes to the maid of honor, so you, Kristie, are safe!”

“Oh, great,” Kendall cries. “Remind me why I agreed to be your maid of honor again?”

“‘Cause you love me, bitch.”

“It’s a good thing I do.”

“I’ll get some more wine,” Hallie offers, climbing out of the hot tub and grabbing a towel.

“See, at least my future sister-in-law is happy to keep my glass full.”

Hallie’s eyes widen, and her cheeks flush pink. She was quiet when she first arrived with Jess, even more so when I suggested going in the hot tub. I knew from Sawyer what had happened earlier in the week on the patio, but she seems to have loosened up a bit now. I hope she’ll have a good time this weekend. After everything she’s been through, she deserves it more than anyone.

“I’ll be right back,” she says, tossing her towel on one of the chairs.

“You might have to check the refrigerator in the garage. I think we might have already drunk what was in the kitchen.”

She nods, and I relax back into the hot tub’s bubbles. Closing my eyes, my head spins a little, and I know I’m well on the way to being drunk. It is my bachelorette party, though. I’m sure there is some unwritten rule somewhere that the bride is meant to spend the whole party drunk.

“Looks like your hot brother couldn’t stay away from his girl,” Kendall says with a laugh as my eyes fly open.

“What?”

“Your brother. You said he was her close protection officer, and that’s how they met, but you’d think he’d let her have a girly weekend without crashing the party.”

My head spins, and I’ve no idea what she’s talking about. Kendall has never even met Sawyer. “My brother?”

“God, you’re drunker than I thought.” She groans, rolling her eyes. “Yes, your brother. Hot, tall, blond, currently pulling Hallie with him into the woods.” My eyes widen in horror, and I jump out of the hot tub.
