“Brooke!” Kendall cries as I grab her hand, pulling her with me toward the kitchen. “What’s going on?”

“Sawyer isn’t blond.” I drag her through the kitchen and out the back door.

“Who the hell was that, then? I assumed it was Sawyer. He had his arms all around her.”

“Did it look like she was being forced to go with him?” She shrugs, and I want to shake her. “Kendall!”

“I don’t know, I didn’t take much notice. I thought she was sneaking off for sex in the woods. I thought it was Sawyer.”

My eyes flick around the back of the house, but Hallie is nowhere to be seen. Fear erupts in my stomach. Something is wrong. I don’t know Hallie that well, but she wouldn’t go off with someone she didn’t know, especially with what she’s been through lately.

“Brooke, what’s going on?” a voice asks from behind me. “Where’s Hallie?” Spinning around, Jess’s face is etched with worry.

“I don’t know. Kendall saw her out here with a blond guy. She thought it was Sawyer.”

“Hallie!” Jess shouts. “Hallie.”

We’re met with silence.

My stomach churns.

“I need to call Sawyer.” Pushing past Kendall and Jess, I head back to the den where I’ve left my phone. Snatching it up, I gasp when there are over fifty missed calls, all from Sawyer. Hitting his name, I hold the phone to my ear, praying he answers, “Brooke!” he shouts as he answers. “Where’s Hallie?”

“Someone’s got her, Sawyer.” A sob escapes my lips, and the line goes silent. “Sawyer? Are you there?” I pull the phone from my ear to check the call hasn’t dropped.

“Fuck! I’m fifteen minutes away. Get everyone inside and lock the doors. The cops are on their way.”

“I’m going after her. I can hold my own. You taught me well.”

“Brooke, no! I taught you a few self-defense moves. This guy likely has a gun and is dangerous. Do as I ask, please.I can’t worry about both of you. Promise me you won’t go out there, Brooke?”

“Okay,” I say with a sigh. “I promise. But, Sawyer, hurry.”

ChapterThirty-Eight

Hallie

I’d felt more than a little apprehensive when I arrived back at the cabin. I hadn’t thought about how I’d feel being back here, especially out on the patio. Brooke had seen I was struggling and quickly handed me a glass of wine. I decided then and there to push that asshole, Matt and what happened last weekend from my mind. It was over, and I was determined to enjoy the weekend.

As I pad barefoot through the living room to the kitchen, I chuckle when I see Brooke was right and there’s no wine in the refrigerator.God knows how many bottles they’ve already gone through.Going out through the back door, I cross the small driveway, making my way to the double garage that sits directly opposite the kitchen. Woodlands surround pretty much the entire house, and hearing a noise in the trees, I glance across, seeing a familiar face.

“Hey, what are you doing here?” I ask, walking toward him. “Did Kitty change her shift?” I frown. “Hang on, I never told Kitty where the cabin is…” I trail off, an uneasy feeling washing over me. My instinct is screaming for me to run, but I’m not quick enough, and he grabs me, his arms trapping me against him.

“Let me go, Nick! What are you doing?” I struggle against him, but he’s strong, and I’m not.

“Blake,” he says with a smirk.

“What?”

“It’s Blake, not Nick, and I’m finishing what Matt started,” he bites out, and I still in his arms.

“What?” I whisper in disbelief.

Waves of panic wash over me.

I try to breathe but there is no air.

Knowing I stand no chance of getting away from him if I have a panic attack, I try desperately to keep it together. He’s pulling me into the trees, and before I know it, I can’t see the cabin.
