“Tell me what’s going on,” he insists. The way he stares at me makes my resolve crumble. I point to the book and explain that I left it at home. To my horror, he crosses the room and picks it up. When he smirks, my face heats.

“Wow, that’s some read you’ve got there darlin’. Has it been a while?” He grins, enjoying my discomfort.

“Ask me tomorrow after my date with your brother,” I snap back. That shuts him up.

“Whatever. I don’t need some lame ass romance book to help me,” he scoffs. Then he begins to read aloud from the passage that the book was open to. I flame, wishing the ground would open up and swallow me right now. I even mentally get halfway through a demon-summoning spell to kick his ass before I find my sense and my tongue.

“I need to work. Tell Rowan I’m looking forward to our date,” I goad him. “Goodbye, Linden, and watch your step on your way out.” I watch him go, and stumble on his way out, laughing lightly. He turns to me in shock and calls, “You did that!” but I shake my head and tell him, “No, I saw that.” He doesn’t believe I have actual powers, even though he’s a freaking fairy. That guy gets under my skin, and not in a good way.

As soon as he’s gone, I lock the door and set to cleansing and protecting the shop. I burn the sage, cleanse the crystals, and program a selection to work for the good of the store. I decide that I need a crystal grid for additional protection and start to move around the shop, grabbing a handful of crystals at random.I clear my head, take some deep breaths and set the intention to protect the shop from any ill intent. Then, I move over to my crystal gridding table, take a seat, and listen to my intuition. The blue kyanite goes first, sitting in the center of the grid. It protects people from fucking with your head, so I feel like I need that first and foremost right now. Next, I lay down a small ring of obsidian, alternated with black tourmaline to repel harm and sorcery attacks. As I have no idea what might be visiting me unwelcomed, I add some spirit quartz to my corners and then set to activating the grid.

Satisfied, I move away from the grid and leave it to work. I wash my hands, drink some water, and have a small apple to refresh myself. While I’m waiting for my appointment to arrive, I decide to sit on the floor and meditate with some agate to see if I can communicate with Pupdog, who has curled up in my lap and gone to sleep.

I close my eyes and am instantly transported to a forest full of oak trees. These, I know. I glance down and see that I’m sitting on the soft grass of the forest floor, in my cross-legged position. Pupdog is not in my lap, but sits opposite me a few paces away. He tilts his head at me curiously, like he’s waiting for me to begin. His tail wags happily.

“Hey, Pupdog. Welcome to my forest. It’s nice to have company…so I was wondering what to name you?”

“How about Onyx?” the dog suggests in my mind.

“But you’re not, ehm, black,” I gently point out.

“But my soul is.” I laugh. Pupdog must have a sense of humor because it’s the most golden, cute and innocent looking ball of fluff I’ve ever seen.

“Jet?”

“Same problem. Black.”

“Ok, how about Labradorite? You like crystals, right? You can call me lab for short.”

“But people will constantly be pointing out the obvious; you aren’t a labrador.”

“Moonie? Short for moonstone. You love moonstone judging by all your jewellery.”

“That’s slang for flashing your butt,” I tell him. “What about Zircon?”

“Sounds like jerk off.”

“Citrine?”

“Too girlie.” Ugh. Why isn’t this working?

“I could call you Kyanite. Ky for short.”

“And be mistaken for a spice? No thank you!” He pauses for a moment and then gives a loud pitiful crying sound. “How about Howlite?”

“So you can make that noise every time I say your name? I’ll pass…What about Jasper? It’s a supreme nurturer and protector. Does that sound like you?”

Pupdog gives one sharp bark and wags his tail. “I thought you’d never figure it out!” He bounds forwards into my arms with such force that I’m knocked backwards.

The forest clears, and I’m lying on the shop floor, Jasper licking my face enthusiastically. I laugh and push him off, clambering to my feet and unlocking the door ready for my appointment.

The bell jingles and I look around to see, not my eleven o’clock, but Rowan.

“Linden said you had some trouble. Is everything okay?”

I sigh and tell him all’s well. I can’t handle repeating everything if Linden has already told him.

“Did you guys see anything suspicious?”
