“Sit your ass down and have another damn drink. In fact, while you’re at it, share the damn bottle. And listen.”

Amazingly, Dev does as East says. Well, apart from sharing the bottle bit. The whiskey is looking dangerously low now anyway. For fuck’s sake. I don’t want to deal with a drunk, angry Devon on top of everything else.

“It would seem like tonight’s the night for coming clean. Tex, you love Callie don’t you?”

“We all do, right?” I reply quickly. Too quickly. There’s sweat on my brow and guilt on my face.

“Yeah, but you’re in love with her, right?”

Fuck.

“Fuck,” Dev barks.

Fuck.

“Fuck,” I echo.

“Okay, I’m taking that as a yes then.”

My gut reaction is to insist that nothing will happen, that I won’t do anything to ruin our friendship or this weird dynamic we have going on. Especially if Callie’s mother is out of the picture, I don’t want to fuck up the only family she has left.

But I can’t say that, can I?

Because something already happened.

I already fucked it all up.

“I—”

“I do too, love her that is. If it helps,” East explains. “I’m in love with her. Always have been.”

“Well that’s just fucking great!” For once I’m glad of Devon’s dramatics. It takes the focus off me.

“What’s up?” East asks Dev.

“Of course you’re both in fucking love with her. She’s my girl. I’ve been crazy about her since the day we met. She kissed me before…ME! She chose me and then…and now she can’t stand the sight of me.”

“Dude, you know that’s not true,” I say, shaking my head.

“Yeah, it’s not like that at all.”

“What’s the point of this little heart to heart anyway?” Devon snaps. He always gets defensive when he’s hurting.

“Well, I think Callie feels the same.” East drops his bombshell with such nonchalance, I think I misheard him. “Which is why we should come clean. Because nothing could happen between us while our relationships are built on lies.”

“You say us like we’re all just gonna be some happy fucking polygamous couple or some shit.”

“First, we wouldn’t be a couple, would we dipshit, if there’s three of us and one of her,” East snaps. He must really be losing patience now.

“Semantics. You know what I meant.”

“Whatever. You just need to get used to the idea of coming clean to Callie. It’s time. And maybe if we’re honest with her, she’ll open up to us and we might actually get somewhere with this investigation.”

“I’m not fucking sharing. Tell her whatever you like, I want no part in it.”

“In what?” I ask.

“Any of it.”
