From what I can hear, he’s outside, hauling in a boat, the sound of a keel on pebbles grating in my mind and heart as I overhear an exchange outside.

‘Figured you’d be here. You got the lass safe?’

‘Yeah.’

‘Folk think you’ve had a Miranda repeat. They reckoned you’d managed to top this one off, too.’

I sit up, straining my ears. A Miranda repeat? Top off?

‘Shush…’ comes Jago’s voice.

‘She doesn’t know you were married? You didn’t tell her?’

‘No. I told you, no one knows, besides you, your wife and the vicar who married us.’

Married?Jago was secretly married to this Miranda? Is she the same woman whom my grandfather’s barge was named after? And did Jago really top her?

Silence.

‘Christ, Jago, what game are you playing? You have to tell her.’

Silence, then: ‘I’m going in to wake her up.’

Reality is back knocking on the door. Not that I care.

But now? All I wanted was to be with Jago. Who, as luck has it, doesn’t want me. How could I have been so blind? How could I have not put two and two together? All the facts were there, right in my face, and yet, I’d completely bungled it.

‘Hey… you’re awake,’ he whispers. ‘The cavalry has arrived. Come on – get dressed. We’re heading back.’

I sit up, looking him square in the face.

‘Who is Miranda and what did you do to her?’
