‘…have a meal and a chat. Talk things over. You never gave me the chance to put my side of the story.’

‘There is no side: I know what I saw.’

‘It was only a little kiss, for old times’ sake. It didn’t mean anything.’

Daniel looked up to the sky and took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. ‘I don’t think me coming over is a good idea.’

‘Why not? We were good together, weren’t we? We had a laugh, and other things…’

‘No.’

Gina stared at him, emotions flitting across her face, one after the other. The one which stuck was scorn. ‘You’ll regret it,’ she said. ‘You’ll realise what you’ve thrown away and come running back to me. But it’ll be too late – I’ll have found someone else.’

‘I hope you find what you’re looking for,’ he said, his heart heavy.

‘Yeah, well, whoever it is will be better in bed. You were useless. No wonder I had to go looking elsewhere.’

Daniel had nothing further to say to her, and when she realised he wasn’t going to be drawn into a slanging match, she gave him a final scowl, then flounced on her heel and marched off.

Glad to be rid of her, he hoped it was for good, but even though he was pleased to see the back of her, he still felt terribly sad and more than a little guilty when it came to Amelia, the poor little mite.

He vowed to be extremely careful in future about dating a woman with children; the last thing he wanted was for another child to get hurt.
