‘Out with it,’ Nicole said. ‘You can’t fool me – there’s more.’

‘I like it,’ Seren confessed.

‘The ice cream van?’

‘No, the van is hideous!’ She shuddered. ‘But I do like the idea of a travelling shop. It’s got potential, and there isn’t anyone else with one for miles and miles. It’s something to think about, and as my dad has actually bought it…’

Nicole was silent for a while. Seren had to admit it was a lot to take in. She didn’t think she’d fully grasped it herself yet.

‘Does that mean you’re going to pack your job in?’ Nicole finally asked.

‘No such luck! I wish I could, but I don’t yet know if I can afford to have it converted. At the moment it’s this shocking pink colour – Freya would love it – has an ice cream cone in the middle of the roof like a weird vanny kind of unicorn, and it plays “O Sole Mio”.’ She sang the tune with gusto.

Nicole burst out laughing.

Seren observed her for a few moments with a disgruntled expression on her face, before her lips began to twitch, and soon she had tears rolling down her cheeks and a stitch in her side. It was quite comical when she thought about it.

‘What will you do if it costs too much to renovate – if that’s the right word when it comes to cars and vans,’ Nicole wanted to know.

‘Dad will have to sell it, and he’ll probably get less than what he bought it for.’

‘You could always sell ice cream,’ Nicole cried, dissolving into hysterics once more.

‘That’s going to go down a storm in December in Tinstone. I’d be better off selling hot chocolate or mulled wine.’ She caught a sudden flash of speculation in her friend’s eyes. ‘No, that’s not going to happen,’ Seren declared. ‘There’s bound to be a whole load of red tape around selling alcohol, mulled or otherwise. And even if I could afford to have the work done, time’s ticking if I want to have it ready for the present-buying season – which is practically upon us already.’

‘How much do you think it’ll cost?’

Seren pulled a face. ‘I’ve absolutely no idea, but however much this place charges I’ll probably not be able to afford it. I don’t know why I’m wasting my time.’

But she did know: excitement was quietly brewing deep inside her.Could she do this?

Perhaps she could…
