CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

BROOKE

Seeing the way Charlotte lit up around Shane, Brooke felt a stab of jealousy. Her main goal for the summer in Florida was to rethink her life and settle the issue of her mother’s dependence on her. But with all these young men sharing the cove with her cousins and her, she couldn’t help but think about finding someone special. Jake, Eric, and Adam were all appealing, but none had seemed especially interested in her. Livy told her to relax and simply enjoy the summer without worrying about any of that.

Brooke moved through the cocktail crowd smiling and speaking to their guests, enjoying the interaction. She’d gone from being quite shy to liking the opportunity to welcome everyone to the Inn. It almost felt as if the Inn was hers.

When she went to speak to Shane’s father, she noticed him studying her. “Hello,” she said. “I’m Brooke Weatherby. We’re all happy that you and your family are staying here at the Inn while you visit.”

“Thank you,” he said politely, giving her another long look. “You’re Jo’s daughter, right?”

Brooke smiled at him. “Yes. By the way, she said to say hi to you. She’s still living in Ellenton, New York, but she told me she remembers you from past visits to the cove.”

“I remember her, too. She was easy to get along with,” Henry said. “It’s nice that your grandmother and my mother arranged to have all of you grandkids here together. It’s a very special group and will bring about fond memories later in life, I’m sure.”

“Yes, I think so too. How are you enjoying the Inn? Is there anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable?”

“Everything’s fine,” he said. “The Inn looks better than ever. The service seems a little better too.”

“That’s what we’re hoping for,” said Brooke. “I’ll talk to you later.”

She moved on to the next cluster of people standing and talking, filled with a new sense of accomplishment.

She looked up in time to see Jake enter the room and quickly went to greet him.
