CHAPTER FORTY-NINE

ELLIE

Ellie sat in her hotel room and eagerly opened her laptop, hoping for another chatty message from Liz. Until now, Liz had followed through on her promise to keep Ellie updated on any news.

She and John were having the time of their lives, taking in sights, enjoying food wherever they wanted. The South of France, where they were now staying, was a dream come true for both of them. That bread, wine, and cheese—tasty.

A message from Liz popped up.

“Dear Ellie, I think you’re going to be very pleased with your granddaughter, Charlie. She and Shane have become a close twosome almost overnight. Henry and his family are visiting, and you know how thrilled that makes all of us, especially Shane and Austin. Henry’s darling Savannah has a sweet way of pulling that family together with abundant love. For me, seeing Henry happy brings me almost to tears.

“In the past you’ve been worried about Charlie feeling she wasn’t truly loved for herself. We had a big cove beach party last night. If you could’ve seen Charlie surrounded by Shane and his family, you would have had as many stinging tears as I did observing how happy she was.

“As for the rest of our plans, Karen, Sarah, Pat, and I are all doing our best to see that everyone has more than one opportunity to get together. Adam is away for a couple of weeks. The others are here. Our chances are pretty good something else will turn out the way we want, but I’m afraid patience will be required.

“We all love you and miss you. Hope you’re having a fabulous time.

“Your co-conspirator. Liz”
