CHAPTER EIGHT

BROOKE

Brooke was sitting on a blanket beside the fire that had just been lit. Jake sat nearby on the sand, sipping a beer and looking relaxed as he talked to Melissa. Brooke couldn’t help glancing his way now and then. He was a handsome man. She knew it would take a lot of willpower not to think of him as anything more than someone she’d be working with, but it was important for her to keep to business. She wasn’t ready for more than that.

Austin came and sat down beside her. “How long are you and your cousins staying? I was sorry to hear that your grandmother is thinking of selling the Inn. It’s a big part of Sanderling Cove.”

Brooke straightened and turned to face Austin. “Selling the Inn?”

Austin returned her wide-eyed stare. “Crap! You didn’t know?”

“No, I didn’t. Neither do Charlie or Livy. The subject hasn’t come up.”

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said anything. I was talking with Granny Liz about my future, and it slipped out.”

“I see,” Brooke said. “I won’t ruin the party, but tomorrow I’ll have a talk with Gran and see how serious she is about selling.” She shook her head sadly. “I’d hate to see it go out of the family.”

“I hope I didn’t mess things up by mentioning it,” said Austin.

Brooke gazed at Charlotte and Livy. They’d be as shocked as she.
