Chapter 9

Joshua

This week went by faster than I thought it would. Before I know it Savannah and I are boarding the plane to her hometown of Richford, New York. She tried to book economy seating as if I could fit in those seats. I politely upgraded us to first class. Just when I get comfortable the plane is descending at the Richford International Airport. I don’t know why I didn’t ask Savvy how we are getting around since her car is not here, so I begin to walk towards the car rental companies once we get our luggage.

“Where are you going?”

“To get us a rental, did you reserve one?”

“No”

“Why not? How are we going to get around?”

She opens her mouth to reply when a deep, “Mom!” sounds out through the airport. She turns to the where the voice came from and there is a tall dark skinned guy walking towards her.

I watch as he picks her up in a bear hug and squeezes her until she tells him, “Saint, put me down. I can’t breathe.”

“Ma, I haven’t seen you in like years. I missed you,” he says.

“Stop over exaggerating, boy! It’s only been weeks.”

He sets Savvy down and she turns to me and says, “Jag let me introduce you to my son. Joshua this is Saint my son. Saint this is Joshua my boyfriend?” She says with a questioning lilt at the end like she’s not sure.

“You’re not sure if he’s your boyfriend, mom?”

“Shut up, boyfriend sounds childish, and man doesn’t sound right either, but we are in a relationship so shut up.”

Saint looks at me and I reach my hand out to shake his hand and he meets me halfway.

“Nice to meet you,” he says. Although his eyes say he and I will be having a talk about his momma. I’m here for all that energy.

“Well, I’m glad I drove my SUV, mom, he wouldn’t have fit in Damell’s car.”

I’m glad too. Her son isn’t too small himself, definitely not as big as me and my brothers but a size to be intimidating to most. He has his mother’s features, but he must take care mostly after his dad.

“Where is Bubba?” I hear her ask.

“At home with Mell, you’ll see him when I take you to get your car.”

We get outside and her son is driving an all-black Range Rover Envoque R. I open Savannah’s door to help her get in, then go to the back and help her son put the luggage in, finally I get in the back seat ready to experience her home.

“So, Saint what do you do for a living?”

“Oh, I’m an assistant football coach for one of the four-year universities, been doing that for a couple of years now.”

“Nice.”

“And what do you do Mr. Joshua?

“Just Joshua.”

“Naw, my mom would snatch my tongue out if I said that. You’re Mr. Joshua.”

“I understand,” I respond. “Well, I own a real estate, architecture, and construction company with my brothers. I'm retired also from the Marine Corp.”

“Nice,” he says.

A few minutes later we pull up to a nice house that looks like it was built in the 30’s or 40’s and my construction side comes up to take in all the details of the house.
