She’s stunning, all wild curls and pale skin with a light dusting of freckles across her nose and cheeks. I tilt my head as I take her in, her hazel eyes go wide and her mouth opens slightly with interest as she notices my stare, allowing me to catch the gold flecks in her irises, before she quickly drops her head as a blush steals its way up her cheeks turning her skin the prettiest shade of pink.

She's timid, that’s blindingly obvious, and I feel a tug in my chest at the sight of her like this. The urge to pull her into my lap and take care of her hits me and I start to soften towards her. The images of how I caught the two of them in the kitchen assault my brain, and my cock starts to harden once again as I wonder what would have happened to her shyness if I had let them carry on, or even joined them both.

I wonder if she’s remembering the position she was in when I caught them in the kitchen, or maybe she’s remembering the sounds of Kenzi screaming my name as I made her come. I smirk at that thought and hear a low growl come from Kenzi, which makes the blush on Poppy’s cheeks deepen.

“So, Poppy, what exactly are you doing here?” I ask her sternly, as I lean over the table and grab a tub of chow mein that is right in front of her.

“Xave,” Kenzi starts.

“No, Kenzi. I’m sure that Poppy can answer for herself,” I say, not taking my eyes off of Poppy as she growls at me again. I have no doubt that if I allowed Kenzi to answer I would never get the whole truth from her surrounding this new development.

Poppy’s whole face is beet red as she leans back into the sofa, her food forgotten as she tries to make herself smaller, as if that would take my attention away from her.Not a chance in fucking hell, Little One.

“Well?” I ask her. She flinches at the word and starts to rub at her wrist nervously.

“Uhm… W-well…” She stutters, still rubbing at her wrist. She looks up at Kenzi before quickly dropping her gaze to her lap once more.

“Ugh, ignore him and eat your food, Angel,” Kenzi tells her. “I’ve already told him why I brought you with me.” She drops a hand onto Poppy’s wrist and squeezes to stop her rubbing at it, and I watch the way Poppy visibly relaxes at the contact before her head whips up to look at Kenzi with wide eyes.

I let out my own growl at the contact, not knowing if it's because Kenzi is touching her, or because I want to, and Poppy snatches her hands away quickly as a small whimper leaves her and she places them in her lap.

“For fuck sake, Xave!” Kenzi yells and I turn my gaze to hers. “I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with you, but you need to tone it the fuck down. You’re scaring her half to death and I’m having a really hard time not jumping over this coffee table and beating you fucking senseless right now.”

“Do not start with me right now, Kenzi,” I tell her, “You are mine, and I will drag you into my lap and punish you if you keep on defying me. Be a good girl and let Poppy answer for herself.” Kenzi’s mouth drops open as I watch her eyes darken slightly in anger.

“Yours?” She asks me incredulously. “Maybe you fell and hit your fucking head in the shower. But let's just get one thing straight, Xavier Ambrose. I will do whatever the hell I want to do, whenever the hell I want to do it. And if I want to hold on to Poppy’s hand to comfort her when the one person I’ve told her she can trust, apart from me, is being a complete arsehole towards her the first time she meets him, then I will do just that.” She grabs hold of Poppy’s hands once more.

“There’s a huge difference between being an arsehole and setting expectations, baby,” I say with a smirk. “When I ask a question Iexpectthe person that I have asked to answer. Besides, this isn’t the first time we’ve met,” I say, my smirk growing, as I turn my gaze back to Poppy. “That was in the kitchen, wasn’t it, Little One?” Poppy flushes and she lets out a shiver, I’m not sure if it’s at the memory or the nickname. I sit back slightly and dig my fork into my food, trying to act like that doesn’t affect me as much as it does, but Kenzi notices and gives me a smirk of her own.

“Ah, so that’s what this is about. You know, jealousy doesn’t become you, Xave,” she says with a chuckle. “I already told you once that if you didn’t want to share me, you should never have suggested it in the first place. And if you think that just because you give some good head I now belong to you alone, you are sorely mistaken. Fucking dumbass.” I growl at her, but she continues before I can reply. “If I want to kiss Poppy in my kitchen I will. I’m still mad as hell you interrupted us earlier. And if you interrupt my time with my Angel again, Xave, I may just have to kill you.”

“Oh, it’s not jealousy, so I wouldn’t worry about that, baby,” I tell her with a grin, as my gaze wanders back to Poppy. “Because the next time I interrupt it will be to join the two of you, not stop it.”

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

KENZI

Poppy snaps her head up and whips her head back and forth between Xave and I. Her face is flushed and her breathing starts to become laboured, the confusion and panic clear in her wide eyes. I have absolutely no idea what is going through her head right now.

“U-uh… W-what?” She looks at me and her brows furrow, then she catches on and lets out a small gasp and in a quiet voice she says, “b-but… Kenzi, I-I’m-” I squeeze her hands and give her a small shake of my head to cut her off and reassure her, understanding exactly what has her so panicked, before turning my gaze to the idiot in front of me.

“For fuck sake, Xave! What a way to make a woman feel comfortable. You’re usually way better at this,” I chuckle as he grimaces at my words.

He places his food back on the table and then leans back, not taking his eyes off Poppy. His hands clench into fists at his side, and I know he is trying to hold back the urge to pull her to him so he can calm her down and comfort her. He clears his throat and then looks at me before his eyes go straight back to Poppy. I don’t think I have ever seen him act this way around anyone.

“Yes, well it would seem that I am having a little trouble stopping certain images from constantly replaying in my head,” He clenches his fists again and lets out a sigh. “Poppy, come here.”

“W-what? Why?” she asks, her eyes go wide as she squeezes my hands and turns to face him.

“Because you need comforting, and I need to be the one to do it. Now, come here, please. I will not ask again.”

She turns back to me with a million questions in her eyes, so I give her a small smile and nod. Xave would never hurt her, plus he’s better at all the hugging and shit than me. She lets go of my hands and gets up, making her way around the coffee table until she is standing next to Xave.

“Sit down,” he tells her, and she goes to sit down on the sofa next to Xave, but he grabs her and places her in his lap, cradling her with his arms. She stiffens at the abrupt change of seat but he doesn’t let her up, just starts to run his fingers up and down her arm in a soothing motion.

“Shh, Poppy, just relax, and calm your breathing.” She starts to relax into his hold and her eyes close as she concentrates on slowing her breathing down. “Good girl,” he tells her, and that cute blush flushes her cheeks as she shivers at the praise.

“Now, Little One, tell me why you came with Kenzi this weekend,” he says to her in a more soothing voice this time.
