I realise what he is doing the moment he finishes speaking.Xave, you fucking sneaky little shit!Poppy opens her eyes and looks at me, a question written all over her face. She's wondering what I’ve already told him, and if I’ve told him everything.

“Y-you told him?” She asks me, turning her worried gaze to Xave before looking back to me.

“Yes, I told him it was for your protection,” I say slowly, silently telling her what I haven’t told him yet, and her eyes widen slightly before she looks down to her lap.

“T-that’s right. K-Kenzi said she didn’t t-trust them enough to leave me there alone,” she stammers as she nods and starts to rub at her wrist.

Come on, Angel. You can do it. Hold it together.

“Hmm, and that’s the only reason, is it?” he asks her, still running his fingers up her arm.

“Uhm…yes?”

He lets out a low growl at her hesitation and she flinches slightly.Fuck! She can’t lie for shit. We are going to get in so much trouble!

Xave lowers his head to hers and breathes in slowly, before letting it out against her ear and making her shiver.

“You wouldn’t be hiding anything from me now, would you, Little One?” He asks her against her ear, lightly nipping it, before easing the sting with his tongue and she shivers again.

“N-no,” she answers, never taking her eyes off her hands.

“Interesting,” he says as he looks up at me, his eyes narrowed. “If that is the case, why would neither of you let me know before you left?” He asks her, bringing his other hand to hers and lifting it to his mouth, kissing it lightly before entwining their fingers together and then placing them back into her lap.

“U-uh, w-well,” she starts, but he cuts her off before she can continue.

“Look at me, Poppy,” he says, and when she doesn’t lift her head he takes his hand out of hers and lifts her chin, lowering his head to hers so they are close enough to kiss. “The only way for me to protect you both is if I know what is going on. If you don’t tell me something, how am I supposed to do that? And, if you don’t tell me something and it ends up putting either of you in danger, or you get hurt, then I will not hesitate to punish you for it.” Poppy sighs as her eyes close and her shoulders drop at his statement.Ahh, fuck!

“C-Clay and the others went to the fight club last night, and Clay made it so she had to fight him in the ring,” she says quietly and Xave’s hands tighten on her as a tear slips past her closed eyes.

“Shh, Little One,” he says, wiping the tear from her cheek and placing his lips on hers in a gentle kiss. “Good Girl. I admire your loyalty towards our little troublemaker. Now, grab something to eat and relax.” She nods to him and he loosens his hold on her just enough for her to grab some Kung Pao Chicken off the table before pulling her back into his arms. Once she’s settled he turns his gaze to me. “So, Kenz. do you want to tell me what the fuck happened last night?”

“Nothing I couldn’t handle,” I tell him, digging into my chow mein. He stiffens at my answer.

“What do you mean‘nothing you couldn’t handle’?” He asks, his hold tightening on Poppy slightly.

“Exactly what I said.” I say with a roll of my eyes shoving my fork back into my mouth.

“Kenzi,” He growls out, and Poppy flinches in his lap looking up at me with a pleading look on her face. He places a kiss on the top of her head and resumes running his fingers up and down her arm to calm her. He bends down to whisper something in her ear and then chuckles as her face goes instantly red before she drops her gaze and quickly resumes eating.

“Xave, I fucking handled it. It wasn’t that big of a deal. I didn’t pull my knife this time, I promise,” I say with a chuckle and a smile his way, holding out for as long as possible. I just can’t help playing with him sometimes, he’s always so serious.

“When it comes to you that could mean absolutely anything, and you fucking know it, Kenzi. Now, tell me what happened before I decide to punish you for defying me,yet again, when it comes to dealing with Clay,” he tells me sternly.

My breath hitches as a shiver runs down my spine at all the fun ways Xave could decide to punish me. Xave chuckles at the movement and places another small kiss on Poppy’s head. She lets out a shiver of her own as he brushes a hand over her shoulder to grab one of her curls and rub it between his fingers.Fuck they look good together. I sigh and shake my head to rid it of the thoughts that have just entered it.Not the time, Kenz. Get it together, we can play another time.

“It’s not like I’m doing it on fucking purpose, Xave. I’m not actively seeking those arseholes out, they keep on coming up to me. You can’t really punish me for something that, technically, is not my fault,” I say with a smug grin on my face, but it fades as he chuckles once more.

“Oh no, baby, that’s not how this works. As I said before, it’s my responsibility to keep you safe, so I decide what warrants bending you over my lap and turning that gorgeous arse of yours red, not you,” he tells me, raising an eyebrow in challenge as my cheeks get heated.

“Fine,” I huff out. “It’s just like Poppy told you. Clay decided after I held a knife to his throat and told him that the only reason he is still standing is because of my promise toyou,” I stop and give him a pointed look before continuing. “That he would make it so I had no choice but to face him in the ring if I wanted to fight last night. Oh, and the fucking owner allowed it, so I’m going to gut the bastard when I see him next.” Poppy gasps at my statement and Xave chuckles and shakes his head, holding her to him so she can rest her head on his chest.

“Don’t worry about that arsehole, I’ll deal with him. He’s going to regret crossing me on this,” he says with a smirk. “But why would Clay think that was a good idea? What did he hope to gain from getting into the ring with you, Kenz?” He asks, his brows furrowed in thought.

“Well, he obviously thought it was a good idea because he and his friends are fucking idiots,” I say with a shake of my head as Poppy giggles softly. “But to answer your question, he claimed that he needed to talk to me and wanted me to finally hear him out. But as he had already pissed me off yesterday, I wasn’t in a listening mood, so I told him the only way I would hear him out was if he somehow managed to beat me in the ring, and if he didn’t he had to leave us alone for good,” I tell him with a chuckle.

“Now that wasn’t very fair of you,” he says, laughing. “Okay, so what happened?”

“Well, first there was some verbal sparring that ended with me telling him his latest conquest looked as much fun as a blow up doll and he’d never be able to handle both me and you.” Xave lets out a choked sound and I look up to see him watching me with hooded eyes.
