Page 43 of Fighting For It

He brushed his hand over mine, pausing to squeeze before moving back to the steering wheel. “How’ve you been? Genuinely. Not this fake bullshit most people expect.”

“Good. I’ve been genuinely good. Finding work is tough, which means things like making rent are tough, but I have more than the necessities, and people looking out for me. You? You said private tutoring.”

“I’m happy I get to keep teaching,” Graham said. “And I noticed you’ve kept up with tech. Despite… restrictions.” He wasn’t asking.

I’d all but confirmed that already. “What you’re implying would’ve violated my probation. Are you wearing a wire?”

“You had your hands all over me earlier. You tell me.” He navigated the streets with ease, taking us closer to the mountains and the edge of the valley.

“Well… there was something in your pants,” I said playfully. “But it was pretty big for a modern listening device.”

“Hard drives took up more space when I was made.”

I couldn’t help but snicker at his phrasing. “Made? Humans call that being born.”

“I— Uh— What are you implying?” His defensive stutter was exaggerated.

I thought my implication was obvious. “Are you a Cylon?”

“N— n— no.”

I wasn’t convinced, and I was struggling to hold my laughter back enough so I could speak. This was easy. Fun. Exactly what I missed about Graham. “If you are, you should know I won’t betray the entire planet, no matter how good the sex is.”

“So much for that mission.” He sighed heavily.

“Wait. Don’t let that stop you from trying. You can’t give up that easily.”

“I’m definitely not giving up. You already have the codes to bring down my defense system.” His voice shifted to serious.

A knot formed in my chest at the abrupt shift in tone. “That was cheesy.”

“At least I don’t tell dad jokes. And you have to admit, it was sweet.”

The best kind of sweet. “Better than chocolate…” I trailed off when he turned onto one of the roads leading to University parking.

“Are you okay?” Graham asked.

“This place has a lot of memories.” I hadn’t been back since graduation. Most of my college time was amazing, but those few mistakes—like the one I made with Tiff—were enough to spoil a lot of the rest.

Graham squeezed my hand. “I didn’t even think to warn you, I’m sorry. Adrienne spends a lot of time up here in the art building, because she has teacher friends who let her use a studio. That’s where we’re meeting her.”

“It’s okay. I’ll be okay.” I had to get over it eventually. Didn’t I?
