Landon leaned in between Elliot and I, and I only moved enough to let him in. I was happy being this close to him. “Cut all of this.” He pointed at the screen.

“You’re oversimplifying things.” Elliot highlighted all the text anyway, and put comment marks in front of it.

“Keep it simple, stupid.”

I smirked at Landon’s easy use of the phrase, but what was better was the way he bounced off Elliot.

“You win.” Elliot typed some more, and hit a couple of keystrokes to automatically replay the steps I’d show them. The game ran, and I didn’t see the glitch. Elliot hit replay a few more times. “”Holy shit, I think it’s working. Who are you with, Landon? Should you even be in here? You’re a DM dev are you? I’d say Nigel knows better, but apparently he’s been talking to F—”

“He’s not with DM.” I cut Elliot off.

“I’m not with a computer company.” Landon’s tone becomes subdued. “I did my college internship last year with an MLM software start-up, but I’m looking if you’re hiring.”

Elliot pointed to a test rig in the corner. “I’ll pay you for the day if you want to help me fix this problem.”

The seconds that ticked away without Landon answering were far more tense than Elliot and mine’s meaningless bickering. “Sure. I’m in.” It took Landon far too long to answer.

But he had and he was staying. That made me giddy in a way I wasn’t used to. “I’ll grab my laptop, and I can test while the two of you work.”

As the three of us settled into a cozy circle in Elliot’s office, I caught a glimpse of the time. Shit. Megan and lunch.

“Let me use your phone.” I was already dialing on Elliot’s desk phone without waiting for a response.

He moved. “Sure. Help yourself.”

“Hello?” Megan’s sweet voice filled the room.

“Hey. I’m sorry. We’re held up, but we’re on our way real soon.”

“We’reheld up?” Megan asked. “You’re still in the office.” She didn’t sound upset, just concerned and curious.

I glanced at Landon. “Landon’s helping us work.”

“Hello,” Landon called.

“Hi, Megan,” Elliot added, and when I shot him a look, he shrugged. “I felt left out.”

Megan laughed. “You’re still in the middle of whatever you’re doing, aren’t you?”

“It doesn’t matter. It’ll wait until after lunch.”

Elliot looked at me, his brows raised.

I stared back, unflinching.

“No,” Megan said. “If you’re working, finish it. We can have dinner after work instead of lunch.”

It was a sweet concession to make, but I already missed her. Yup, it had been a week and I was an addict. “No. Moonbeam—”

“It’s okay.” It sounded like she meant it. “Work. Solve the problem. Tell them Landon is the best, and I’ll see you both tonight.”

I hated to cancel plans with her. Ever. “I—”

“If you show up before you finish this work, I’m going to be pissed off,” Megan said.

I huffed. “Fine. Tonight, then.”

I disconnected.
