It takes a second, but that thought stops the rest in their tracks.

Because how fucking selfish could I be?

Twisting Drago’s tragedy and Mari’s steel will intoyet another reason magic hates poor little Willa.

Grow the fuck up.

This has nothing to do with me. This is a thing that happened, and it has nothing to do with any of my stupid self-doubt or undeserving bullshit.

Right?

“Right.” I say out loud and grab both Drago’s arms, attached and detached. “You ready?” I ask him.

“For what?” For the first time this whole awful night, Drago’s eyes are completely black with fear.

“Fuck if I know, mate. But I’m down to find out if you are.”

Drago swallows and gives a single head bob.

And we begin.

Chapter27

Important momentsalways happen at half speed. Good or bad, every meaningful event slows down enough that I can ruminate on them in crystal clear detail, usually until I’ve driven myself crazy.

If I sayit doesn’t hurt, would you believe me?

Because it doesn’t.

The moment Drago agrees, blue light encompasses us, arcing through his scars, into me and into his dead arm.

I don’t know what it is, or where it comes from, but both of us watch as it bids bone to grow from the stump and into Drago’s graying arm. Then blood vessels and muscle, a layer of insulating fat, and, finally, skin.

It doesn’t hurt, and it doesn’t take long.

And the skin isn’t raw and new-looking, like I expect.

It’s perfect, unblemished skin like Drago grew it himself.

“What the hell was that?” he asks when the blue light recedes back into his scars.

“Yeah. What the hellwasthat?” Rafe echos.

“I don’t know. I don’t know at all,” I say and sink into the nest to cuddle closer to Drago. “But let’s not tell Mari I did that so easily for a while, OK?”

I glance over Drago’s enormous barrel chest to see her sleeping peacefully. Her face is slack, her body is relaxed. “I don’t want her to suffer any more than she already has.”

Rafe wastes no time getting into the nest with me.

But Jonah’s got his nose in his phone, of all places. “Jonah?” I beckon.

“Hold on. Just telling our Laurel Cove friends the update.”

“Oh, good. And news from them?”

He shakes his head before arranging himself at the top of the nest, head to head with me. “Nope. Except the witches are super pissed you left with their entire arsenal of magic.”
