“You should get some rest. You can stay here tonight,” he forced himself to say. He had to leave, or else he would sit by this stranger’s side and try to learn everything about her.

She didn’t answer, but she did lower her eyes. At that moment, he heard it. The sudden downpour of rain, as if a giant cloud had opened up right above them, the force of it battering the roof.

“That should put me to sleep,” she said.

Stephen smiled. He tilted his head to the side and watched as Hannah’s eyes darted to the boarded windows and the tattered armchair on the other side of the living space. “If you need anything, call for me. I will be right over there.. Don’t try getting up.”

Hannah’s response to that was to simply roll her eyes. Stephen barked a surprised laugh.

Turning his back to her was more difficult than he expected it to be. He’d only met her a short while ago and yet he wanted to stay by her side, if only to gaze upon that beautiful face once more. But he knew how odd that would be and so he made sure to walk away, to lock himself into the other room out of the hope that the barrier of wall would keep her out of his thoughts.

As he settled onto dusty armchair, throwing his arm over his head, Stephen had a bad feeling that it would be easier said than done.
