“Oh, my love,” Lady Josephine said. “It was the same for me.”
Then with an effort, he pulled himself upright. “What did you just call me?”
“My love.”
“Can it be possible? Do you love me, Josie?”
“You must know I do.”
“I love you too. I have never loved—will never love—another woman as I do you. If I truly believed you love me, I would move heaven and earth to make you mine.”
“I do,” she whispered.
“Then even God himself can’t keep us apart.”
“But how—”
“We will find a way.”
She fell asleep, contented. He dressed quietly and slipped out of her chambers.
