Chapter 29

Eloise’s eyes fluttered open as a soft arm wrapped tight around her waist, sending surges of excitement throughout her body. The arm belonged to no other than Simon, the man she longed to see more than anyone else in the world. As she turned her body around on the bed, his smile caused her to beam with happiness, and it just now hit her how much she had truly missed him. His eyes were still that familiar honey brown color, decorated with dark specks.

“I thought you’d never wake up.” He pushed a curl away from her face, his fingers brushing the outline of her skin and remaining there, softly caressing her cheeks and causing her to blush.

She wrapped her hands around his neck, holding him as close as she could, afraid that with one blink, he could slip away. “I missed you. Where were you?” she asked.

“I’ve been right here.” His lips rested on the crook of her neck, slowly caressing, brushing, and hugging that sensitive spot of skin as her breath grew slow and heavy with her want of him. But he didn’t stop there. He continued by capturing her lips in his own, and his tongue gently asked for permission.

She pulled away. “Will you stay with me once this is over? I want—” she paused, “I want to stay with you.”

Before he had the chance to reply, he was pulled away, and everything was replaced by unfamiliar darkness.

Eloise stretched her arm on the soft sheets, expecting to feel Simon’s touch, but she was only met with coldness. It was late in the night, the moon visible through the window, yet Simon was yet to pay her a visit. She knew he was busy, she expected this much, but she expected and waited for him all day, ignoring her body’s exhaustion in hopes he would enter the room any moment.

But tiredness had eventually consumed her, and she’d fallen into a deep sleep. He was yet to come, and she was beginning to doubt he would anytime soon. She wrapped her arms around her body, sighing. The dream had felt so dear to her; she almost wished he was here at this moment, so she could admit exactly how she felt about him.

Taking hold of the water cup from next to her, she took a sip. Her eyes drifted to the door once more as if he would barge inside any moment now, with his usual smug and proud stance and smile. She continued counting the seconds but once again, nothing.

Perhaps he’s far too busy with fixing the stables. But how busy can he be? It wouldn’t cost him much of his time to visit me, simply to check on me. Or perhaps he’s waiting for me to go see him? No, that wouldn’t make much sense.

“Ugh,” she groaned in frustration. She hit her face against the pillow, wrapping the woolen blanket around her in one swift movement. Her eyebrows furrowed together, and a frown found its way to her face.

“He’s being childish. I would have come to see him by now,” she said to no one in particular.

She allowed those thoughts to repeat in loops in her head as she closed her eyes, envisioning that he was holding her close to keep her warm. “I want to see you,” she muttered. Until finally, sleep found her once again.
