“She doesn’t need to hear about that now.”
“Hear about what?” Rita asked.
“Don’t worry about it,” Ari said. “You have enough on your plate.”
“What did he do? You know I won’t stop bothering you until you tell me.”
Ari frowned. “He burned our house down earlier tonight.”
“What?” Rita exclaimed. “Are you serious?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because we wouldn’t stop looking for you.”
“I’m so sorry, Ari.”
“You don’t have anything to apologize for. You’re the victim here.”
“So are you. I can’t believe he did that. You can stay at my house. It’s the least I can do.”
“They’re at our place,” Lia said. “Like Ari said, don’t worry about anything. You just need to recover.”
“Speaking of recovery,” said a medic, “we need to get you to the hospital. The doctor is going to want to observe you tonight.”
“Can we visit her?” Ariana asked.
“That’ll be up to the doctor.”
Ari and Lia hugged Rita again, promising to see her soon.
“We’ll camp outside your room if we have to,” Ari said.
“I’ll sneak you some food,” Lia said. “What do you want?”
“Anything. I’m starving.”
Ariana and Lia held each other as they watched the ambulance take her away.
