“Any news?”
“No.” She collapsed onto her pillow.
He pulled her close. “We’ll find her.”
“You don’t know that.”
“We have to stay positive. Think of all we’ve been through and survived. Rita’s a fighter too. She’ll come back home.”
Ari sighed. “But where is she? And why doesn’t Boone care?”
“I wish I knew. Boone’s response makes no sense. If anything happened to you, I’d be fighting nonstop to find you.”
“He has to know something.”
Damon didn’t respond.
“You agree.”
“I hope he’s not involved, but he isn’t giving us reason to trust his innocence.”
She sighed. “What are we going to do?”
“Are you worried about his threats?”
“I’m worried about Rita.”
He rubbed her arm. “That doesn’t answer my question. Does he make you feel unsafe?”
Ari’s stomach churned acid. “It isn’t like I’m going to stop trying to find her. He’ll just have to deal with that.”
“We need to tell the police what he said to you.”
“No,” she said. “That’ll only upset him more. I’m planning to just stay out of his way. He’s all talk and no action. He’s probably already focused on his girlfriend and has forgotten about Rita.”
“We need to officially document what he said,” Damon said. “That way, if he does try something stupid, the cops would already be aware of the possibility of trouble.”
“I don’t want to think about him anymore.”
“He’s going to be a problem if we don’t.”
“Why don’t we see what Lia thinks?” Ariana asked. “He threatened her too.”
“I don’t want to wait long. Ask her first thing in the morning.”
“I will.”
Damon kissed her cheek.
Ari closed her eyes and tried to fall back asleep, but a flurry of images plagued her. Made her heart pound, and her mind race. Images of Rita beaten and bloody.
Damon’s breathing slowed and soon turned to the rhythmic pattern of a sound rest.
If only it were that easy for her. He’d been through so much in his life too and yet could sleep without nightmares. Why couldn’t she?
Maybe she could.
Ari matched her breathing with Damon’s. Watched his chest move up and down.
