ChapterFourteen

The abductor stood at the edge of the park, careful to stay out of view from those arriving to support Rita. If he’d have thought ahead, he would have realized someone might plan a vigil. That they’d make a such a big deal about her disappearance. Rita’s friends wouldn’t sit still.

If he’d been smart, he’d have put more thought into the whole thing. But there hadn’t been time.

He’d needed to act fast. And finding her alone in the parking lot was his chance.

She had tried ending things between them. It wasn’t the first time she’d threatened it, but the look in her eyes had made one thing clear — she meant business this time. The night before he’d taken her, she hadn’t left room for doubt.

And if he couldn’t have her, nobody could.

He still stood by that.

Rita would not get to go on living her life as if she hadn’t ruined his. Smiling at her customers, hanging out with her friends as if she wasn’t about to destroy his reputation.

She would get none of that — no friends, no business. Not until she agreed to stay with him.

Eventually she would see the error of her ways.

Unfortunately, that would take work. Now she was even more convinced they needed to end things, pissed that he’d tied her up. But she’d left him with no other choice.

Given more time, she’d come to see things from his perspective. A person could only go so long without food, without sunshine, without everything they held dear.

He wasn’t completely cruel. Rita had all the water she wanted. He had to keep the woman alive. At least until she changed her mind.

And she would. Eventually.

He was patient. Always had been. That was part of his problem. He was too patient, too giving.

Rita had become accustomed to his kindness, his generosity. She'd thought that made him weak, that she could walk all over him.

Away from him.

That was where she was wrong.

Leaving him was not an option. Not if she wanted to live. Even if it took a year or more to convince her, he would wait. She would come to her senses at some point.

Meanwhile, her friends would hold these vigils and gather crowds of supporters.

For all the good that would do.

Nobody would find Rita.

Ever.

Sure, they’d found that shoe and even the car. But not her. And they wouldn’t.

Not in a million years. Which was how long he’d wait for her to change her mind if it came down to that.

He’d convinced her to fall in love with him in the first place. Now it was a matter of getting her to see what she’d seen at first. They could rebuild. It would be trickier this time, granted.

Now that he had her tied to a bed, locked in a room.

But once she realized she depended on him for her life, she’d see him for what he was — her savior. She needed him for everything. Without his care and concern, she would die.

He would hate for that to happen. What an unnecessary tragedy that would be.

All she had to do was admit they were meant to be together. That she belonged to him. She was his.
