Ariana shoved her. “You wouldn’t.”
“Okay, fine. But tell me your thought about Rita. We can decide together if it’s worth its salt.”
There was no point in trying to keep from telling Lia. She wouldn’t give up. “What if Rita took off to make Boone look bad? He’s obviously already threatening her. She could hope the police will suspect him and put him behind bars.”
Lia didn’t say anything.
“You think I’m a horrible person for thinking that,” Ariana said.
“It’s genius!” Lia said.
“What?”
“Given all of this new information, it makes perfect sense. I wish I’d thought of it. Plus, it has the added benefit of Rita being safe and alive. We couldn’t ask for more than that.”
“Except that if she did stage her own kidnapping, she could get into a lot of legal trouble.”
“How much?” Lia asked.
“I’d have to ask my dad. But that’ll have to wait. We need to let the detective know what we found.”
“We can’t tell her our theory about Rita faking her disappearance,” Lia said. “I feel like that’d give them reason to stop looking.”
“For sure. Plus there’s no reason to think it has any merit.”
“Let me snap some pictures of this stuff before the police won’t allow us near it,” Lia said. I want to find out all I can about Mitch. Did he take Rita? Is he the baby’s dad?”
Hopefully Detective Rojas would be able to find the answers.
