He leaned back, then grabbed the weapon.

Rita yanked.

He pulled.

A sliver of wood dug into her flesh.

Mitch gave a solid tug, bringing her within reach. “You need to let me take you to Boone. If you ever cared about me like you claimed, you won’t let him ruin me.”

“I’ve already played that game, and I’m done. Boone used me as a pawn with my parents. I’m not a piece of meat!” She released the weapon and raced for the door.

His footsteps pounded behind her. “I can’t let you escape. As much as I don’t want you to get hurt, I have to watch out for myself.”

“You never cared about me.” She reached the door.

It had three deadbolts.

She unlocked the first

His steps thundered closer.

She twisted the second lock.

Mitch’s fingertips brushed against her back.

Her hands shook as she struggled with the third one.

He grabbed her arm and pulled her against him. “I hope you know how much it kills me to do this.”

“Then don’t!” She squirmed, hitting and kicking him.

“I have no other choice. I’ll go to prison if he releases the papers.”

“You’ll go there anyway for what you’re doing to me.”

“Boone will keep me from getting in trouble for this. He won’t tell anyone.”

“What makes you think I’m going to keep quiet?” she demanded.

His grip tightened. “What did you say?”

“You heard me.” She bit his arm.

He cried out. Released his hold.

She reached for the third deadbolt. Unlocked it.

Mitch threw her against a wall. Pinned her against it. “You aren’t going anywhere. Ever again.”
