The wood connected with Mitch’s head. He gasped. Turned toward her, shock in his eyes.

She only had the satisfaction of seeing that because her eyes had adjusted to the dimness.

Rita hit him again.

He went down. Collapsed with a loud thud.

She leaped over him and into the hallway. No time to stop. Just run. Get away.

Light shone from the other end.

“Come here!” called Mitch.

As if.

She ran toward the light. It hurt her eyes. As they struggled to adjust, she recognized the living room.

He’d brought her to his house, but to a room she’d never seen.

Footsteps sounded behind her.

She spun around, ready to knock him out this time.

Mitch skidded to a stop and held out his hands. “Don’t.”

“Give me one good reason, you lying sack of—”

“Your husband paid me off!”

Rita almost dropped the table leg. “What?”

“I didn’t want to kidnap you, but he blackmailed me.”

Of course he did.

“With what?”

Mitch rubbed his hair, blood coloring his skin. “I can’t let you escape.”

“Yes, you can. If you ever loved me, then you’ll let me go.”

“It has nothing to do with that.”

“Actually, it does.”

She clung to her weapon, inching away from him. “If you care about me, you won’t hurt me any more than you already have.”

“If you get away before I hand you over, he’ll release the documents. It’ll ruin me.”

“And holding me prisoner won’t?”

He took a step closer. “You see my dilemma. I have to give you over to Boone. Then I don’t get in trouble for any of it.”

“I should’ve known better than to trust a man.” Beads of sweat broke out along her hairline. “You never cared about me! Boone was behind this the whole time, wasn’t he? Even before we started seeing each other.”

Mitch looked away.

“I hate you both!” She swung at him.
