“I don’t care what it has to do with,” Ari said. “I just want Rita back safe and sound. When I see her, I’m going to give her a hug and never let go.”

“You’ll have to push me out of the way first,” Lia said. “Because I’m not letting her go either.”

One of the police cruisers lit up like a Christmas tree. The siren wailed, and it peeled out of the parking lot.

Chatter sounded over the radios.

Another car raced away.

Ariana and Lia both leaped to the ground.

Damon moved closer to the cars, trying to hear what anyone said. It all sounded like a jumbled mess.

An officer glared at him. “You’ll need to back up, sir. We already directed you to stay near your cars.”

“What’s going on?”

“There’s an emergency.”

“Regarding what?” Damon asked.

“Back up,” the officer repeated. “Don’t make me say it again.”

Damon drew a deep breath, but did as he was told.

“What’s going on?” Ariana asked.

“They won’t tell me.”

“Can you get your dad to find out?” Lia asked.

“I can’t keep asking favors,” Ari said.

“But this is for Rita.”

“Right, but there’s only so much he can do without getting into trouble. Let’s see if the detective will tell us anything.” Ariana marched toward the cruisers.

Lia ran after her.

Charles turned to Damon. “Should we go with them?”

“We’d be better off warming up the cars. I have a feeling the cops are going to want us to leave after this.”

Another cruiser zoomed down the street, siren blaring.

“Something big is going on,” Damon said. “I hardly ever see one police car racing down a road, much less several.”

“Isn’t there an app to listen to scanners?”

“Probably.” Damon moved so he could see Ariana and Lia.

They were talking to Detective Rojas. She didn’t look angry. That was a good sign.

“I’m going over there,” Charles said.

Damon went with them.

Ariana and Lia were looking at something the detective was showing them on a tablet. They both looked pale.
