ChapterTwenty-Eight

The flames lit up the night sky, and the neighborhood looked like day. Boone would be proud when he saw the work on video later.

Mitch lowered his hat and ducked behind some onlookers. Not that he needed to worry much about hiding. Everyone was focused on the blaze. His handiwork.

Their plan was perfect. The police had no clue that Mitch even existed, so they didn’t know to keep an eye out for him. He was able to do Boone’s dirty work, giving his boss the alibis he needed.

And soon he’d get a huge increase in his income.

Everything was about to pay off.

Now those nosy neighbors would be off Boone’s back for good. This sent the message loud and clear. The NDA hadn’t worked. Those two had still gone to the woods to look for Rita.

Who knew Rita had such loyal friends? She was so shallow, he couldn’t imagine them talking about anything deeper than where to get their next manicure.

In the beginning, it had been torture faking the relationship with her, pretending to find her fascinating. The woman droned on about the most boring topics. She was enamored with herself, and nothing else.

If Boone hadn’t been paying him, he wouldn’t have lasted more than an hour with her at first. Even her looks weren’t enough of a draw. Once she opened her pie hole, all attraction waned.

But after the months of Mitch’s influence, Rita was shaping up into the kind of woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Now she was capable of intelligent conversation. It was just a matter of domesticating her. Then she would hand over the reins of the restaurant to him so he could run it while she kept the house.

Boone wanted her dead, and that posed a problem now that Mitch wanted to keep her.

He needed to figure a way out of that before Boone showed up and finished the job.

Maybe he would have to hurt Rita enough to convince Boone she was dead. Then he could secretly keep her alive and all to himself.

The thought sent a wave of warmth through him.

With one more glance at the fire, he inched away from the crowd.

Rita was his.

It was time.

He needed to be quick, before Boone decided to make his move to kill her.
