ChapterThirty-Three

Ariana rubbed her temples, not that it helped the pounding headache. She turned off the radio. At least they still had their cars, despite the fire.

“Are you going to answer that?” Damon asked.

“I thought that was my head pounding.” She dug into her purse and checked her phone.

“Who is it?”

“The detective.” Ariana accepted the call. “Hello?”

“I have good news.”

“You found her?”

Damon pulled the car to the side of the road and stared at her.

Ari put it on speaker.

“I haven’t seen her,” said Detective Rojas. “But someone called 911 claiming to be Rita Walker.”

Everything disappeared around Ariana.

Had she heard right?

“Where is she?” Damon asked.

“In the Shady Ferns neighborhood.”

Ariana exchanged a bewildered glance with Damon. That area was clear across town, in the opposite direction of where they’d found the shack.

“She’s in Shady Ferns?” Ariana asked.

“Allegedly. I’m on my way now.”

“So are we.”

“Stay home and let us handle this.”

“Home?” Ariana asked.

“I’m sorry. Please stay where you’re at. We need to make sure Rita’s safe. It will be some time before you’ll be able to see her. I’ll keep you updated.” She ended the call.

Ari shoved the phone in her purse. “She’s crazy if she thinks I’m going to sit around and wait to hear if the person in Shady Ferns is Rita.”

“Then we’ll head over.” Damon pulled back onto the road and turned around.

“Do you think it’s really her?”

“I hope it isn’t a prank.”

“That would be cruel.”

Halfway there, she remembered to call Lia with the good news.

She and Charles also decided to go and see if it was really Rita.

The detective would have to use force to keep them from their missing friend.
