Ariana almost dropped her drink. “What?”

“Dead?” Lia asked. “Did someone shank him?”

“It isn’t Boone’s or Mitch’s.”

“Whose is it?” Lia demanded.

“You never met him,” Rita said. “After I broke up with Mitch, I met this other guy. We hit it off right away.”

“How’d he die?” Ari asked.

“I’m certain Boone was behind his death, but I can’t prove it.”

“What makes you think it was him?” Lia asked. “Was the father one of those guys in the black and white photos we found? The ones he was using to blackmail you because of the prenup?”

“Nope. All those guys, Boone sent my way to trap me. Isn’t he messed up? Sending them to tempt me. Though I do have to say, he does know my type. They were all hot and a ton of fun. But nothing lasted. How could it? Not until I met—” She stopped suddenly. “—him.”

“Tell us about him,” Lia said. “What’s his name? We won’t tell a soul. Right, Ari?”

“That goes without saying.”

“It can’t get out. It would ruin his family.”

“He was married?” Lia exclaimed, her expression tightening. “You’d go after another woman’s husband?”

“It wasn’t Charles or Damon, so chill out.”

“Who. Was. He?”

Rita held Lia’s gaze. “Do you honestly think I’d do that to you? You and Ari are my best friends. Or do you think Charles would step out on you? He’s crazy about you. Boone never stopped cheating on me. What else was I supposed to do? Sit around and take it?”

“There’s this thing called divorce,” Lia said. “You know, for people who are unhappily married.”

“Even when their marriage is just as miserable as mine?”

“Going after other women’s husbands is low, Rita. Real low.”

“You can honestly say that knowing the prenup stated I’d lose everything if I divorced him? We’re talking about Boone. The man who tried to have me killed after blackmailing me. The guy behind Ariana’s house fire. Having an affair — like the many he’d already had — was my only option.”

“There are plenty of men who aren’t married,” Lia said. “They aren’t enough for you?”

“Who was the father?” Ariana asked, keeping her tone light. “We’re just curious. Right, Lia?”

She crossed her arms.

“What’s with you tonight?” Rita asked her.

“Was the guy just as miserable as you were?” Lia asked. “What about his wife? Did he already have plans to leave her? Or was he in the process of divorce? Tell me you didn’t get in the middle of a happy marriage.”

“If he was seeing me, how do you think he felt about his wife?”

“How would I know?” Lia snapped. “Maybe he was blinded by your beauty and feminine wiles.”

“Feminine wiles?” Rita laughed. “You can’t be serious.”

“You won’t tell us who he is, so yes I am.”

“Happily married men don’t cheat, so even if you don’t trust me, you have nothing to worry about.”
