Ariana put her hand on Lia’s arm. “Rita would never do anything to hurt either one of us.”
“You’re taking her side?”
“There’s no side to take.”
“Right.” Lia shoved her chair under the table and stormed toward the door.
Rita turned to Ariana. “What just happened?”
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out. She first got upset when we were at your car before you left.”
Her brows drew together. “She did?”
“As soon as the topic of your baby came up. I think she’s more upset about not getting pregnant than she’s letting on. Maybe she doesn’t even want to admit it to herself.”
“And I got pregnant without even trying.”
“By someone else’s husband.”
Rita drew a deep breath. “I better talk to her.”
“Maybe she just needs space.”
“No. I can’t leave this hanging between us.” Rita rose. “I need to say goodbye to the mayor and let the manager know I’m leaving.”
“Can you at least give me a ride home? Lia drove me here.”
“Sure. Give me a minute.” Rita headed toward the banquet room after telling the server to bring Ariana another drink.
That was the last thing she needed. She was already feeling the effects of the other ones, and she needed to be at the top of her game to help Rita and Lia work this out.
Then she needed to be there for Damon when he returned.
But who would take care of her if she fell apart?
