ChapterTwo

Ariana Jones stared at the blank wall before trailing her gaze to the two-way mirror. So much for trying to avoid looking at it.

This was a first. Sitting in one of these rooms as a suspect. She’d sat in similar rooms for various other reasons, but never for this.

At least she wasn’t under arrest.

For murder.

It hardly seemed possible that human remains had been found on her property. They had to have been there since she and Damon moved in — they hadn’t even reached the two-year anniversary of becoming homeowners.

Would that be considered not very long? The head of their construction crew had used that term when describing the bodies found. They hadn’t been there for very long.

Surely, the police would see she and Damon couldn’t have committed the crime.

If only Damon could be with her, but he was in another room himself for questioning.

Having grown up with her dad as a policeman, she knew the drill. The cops were separating them so they didn’t have time to collaborate on a story. Not that it mattered. All they needed was the truth.

But if she and Damon had committed the crime, they would have had all the time leading up to this point to discuss the details. Only because they knew nothing about the bodies did they have no time to talk to each other about it.

Did the officers actually think they’d have let the construction crew find them if they knew about the remains? She and Damon would be really stupid criminals if that were the case.

Knock, knock.

Ari’s heart leaped into her throat. She tried to keep the fear off her face and body. No doubt someone stood on the other side of the mirror, studying her every move.

Detective Rojas entered and sat across the table. “Ariana.”

“Detective.”

Silence hung in the air.

Ariana was already familiar with the detective because she had worked on her friend Rita’s case when she was abducted.

Rojas flipped through some papers before turning her attention to Ariana. “Didn’t think I’d be seeing you again so soon.”

“Me neither.” Ariana took a deep breath. She didn’t want to think about everything that had happened over the last month. Her friend’s disappearance. The neighbor’s threats and subsequent arrest. The arson. Now the bodies.

She shoved those thoughts from her mind.

The silence between her and the detective dragged on.

Ari cleared her throat. “How can I help you?”

“What can you tell me about the remains on your property?”

“Only that I’m still processing the news. Damon and I were having lunch with Rita when he got the call.”

“You didn’t know they were there?” asked the detective.

“Of course not. The realtor failed to mention that fact. I’m sure she didn’t know either.”

Rojas scribbled notes.

Ariana resisted the urge to glance at the mirror. Not like she’d see the person on the other side.

“How long have you lived in your house?”
