She told her the date they purchased the now-destroyed house.

“Two years,” said Rojas.

“Almost.”

“Did you ever suspect the remains were there?”

“No.”

“You never did any yard work and came across anything weird?”

“No,” she repeated.

“You sure?”

“We hire people for that,” Ariana said. “Everyone in the neighborhood does. And nobody we’ve hired has mentioned anything.”

“Okay.” The detective scrawled more notes. “I’ll need the information of each of them.”

“I’ll have to text it to you.” Ariana gulped down the remainder of her water bottle. It didn’t help her parched throat.

“Sure. Do you need another water bottle?”

“I’m fine.” The faster they could get through this, the sooner she could leave.

“It’s no problem. I can get you whatever you need. Coffee, tea, snacks.”

Ari relaxed a little. Surely, the woman wouldn’t be so kind if she thought Ariana had killed someone. Unless it was an act. A trick to get Ariana to trust her.

She couldn’t let down her guard for a moment.

“However, I wouldn’t recommend the coffee,” said the detective.

“My dad always says the same thing about his precinct’s coffee. He says it always tastes stale.”

Rojas smiled. “That’s right. Your dad’s an officer here in Washington.”

“A detective,” Ariana said. “He loves solving cases.”

And he would stop at nothing to prove his daughter’s innocence if she was accused.

Detective Rojas didn’t indicate whether she picked up on that cue. “You want water or tea?”

“Nothing. I just want to go home.”

“It could be a while.”

“Then let’s move on with the questions,” Ariana said.

“It’ll go quicker if you’re comfortable.”

“Water, please.” The words left Ari’s mouth before she registered them.

Rojas left her notes on the table and went out the door.

It was a test. Would Ariana look at what she wrote?

Not with a two-way mirror but a camera in the corner as well. She’d really have to be desperate and dumb to try that.
