ChapterThirteen

Ariana forced a smile. “Hello, detectives.”

“Are your friends here?” said Rojas, her expression stiff.

“Do you need something?”

“Just answer the question,” said Kamada.

“We’re all here. Can we help you?”

“Yes. We need to ask a few questions.”

“Sure. Would you like to come in, or should I get them?”

“You can get them,” said Rojas.

“Just a moment.” Ariana left the door cracked open and returned to the kitchen.

“Another window salesman?” Rita asked, and yawned.

“The detectives.”

“Why?” Lia asked.

Rita groaned. “What now?”

“No idea, but they want to talk to all of us.”

Grumbling, they followed Ariana.

Rita stood tall. “How can we help you, officers?”

“Detectives,” Rojas corrected. “We have a few questions, then we’ll be on our way.”

“Shoot.”

“How well did you know the nannies that used to work next door?” Kamada asked, looking at Lia.

“Never spoke with them,” Lia said.

The detectives turned to Rita.

“Not well,” she said. “Although, you could ask my husband. I’m sure you know how much he likes younger women.”

“Noted.” Rojas turned to Ariana. “You never met them while house shopping?”

“Never even met the owners.”

Kamada gave them each a card. “If you happen to think of anything, give us a call.”

“What about the body you found today?” Ariana asked.

“Which one?” asked Rojas.

“You found multiple?”

The detectives exchanged an unreadable look before Kamada turned back to her. “You may as well know there was another in your yard.”
